Prevention Meeting: June 2, 2026

AGENDA:
Belinda (Community Concern) Requesting a letter for court, because of the community impact for next court day. Letter to be written on behalf of ROC, requesting to be assessed and approved prior to signing.
Janelle (Lance Memorial): Committee of people planning it. Picking days to host it, finances secured, posters to come. Going to meet together to continue planning.
Community Clean up Update: Looks good. The heat affected the participants joining. Need another clean up day before elders gathering.
Christopher (Elders Gathering): Going to start setting up on the 8th. Security arranged for the next couple weeks. Hammering out last minute to do’s, shopping. Hauling and set ups will follow. Elders calling from all over to gather information. Need more moose, land users going out to hunt. Costs of everything has sky rocketed over the last years. Budget is over $200k.

Question about ordering of gas and gas bar/coop snacks for guests, water.
Opening ceremonies: Two elders we are honouring, Rosa and Henry. Asking family to walk with them at grand entry.
Kitchen – volunteer coordinator. If you have staff open to helping contact volunteer coordinator to be delegated a task.
Daily Circles – Phyllis coordinating, Belinda and Shelley will be sitting in with her.
Kimberly (ROC Agenda & Friendship Centre Update): H&W doing the cooking for ROC.

RoundTable:
Chris (REC): Batoche and St Anne coming up. Canada Day full day of events, fireworks aren’t confirmed right now. Grad Trip June 24th to the mountains. 3 summer students, 1 at fitness centre – hired end of June. St. Ann – we need more help, still room on the bus. Janelle going to make a new poster for info on St Ann.
Scott (RCMP): Scott will be leaving about September, no official date. Will be looking for a DSA position, Leah will continue to work remotely until position is filled. Scott’s position is open. Sunday new member coming in. For first time in a long time, we will be almost fully staffed.
Belinda (SHA): Together in Light has been going good, will take a break until fall. Womans support group every Wednesday, good turn out of joiners. Thank you Farrah for beautiful Prayer. Shout out to everyone for clean up. Sharons job is still posted.
Janelle (REC): This weekend was a success at Surry River. Got lots of fish. Took a family to camp. Its a lot of work and it was hot. Busy with the big events coming up.
Farrah (HW): Shout out to Recreation for 100 km challenge. I did it even though I didn’t join the challenge, but it got me moving daily. Women’s bible study changes from Monday to Tuesday, so it doesn’t conflict with other programming.
Shelley (HW): Thursday Sobriety Support Blair will be facilitating. Book club is almost done with this book. Shout out to our team bc of all the programming being done and the work in the community. Usually do a daily reading on the radio, encouragement. We should lift each other up. Grand Opening of WC was so awesome, was so great to see the youth that came to join. Amazed at the Charccuterie board we made, everything turned out well. Beautiful day. Interview for Faculty of Social work, thank you to KML for supporting me to take the program. How far I’ve come from being a drug addict to where I am today, and for the opportunity to work for Health & Wellness, thankful for my job.
Lynette (Education): Seats available for first aid CPR 27th/28th. $200 a seat. Trying really hard to get drivers training this summer. Blair is helping with Fire arms and boat safety here. Education Program – is a go. We will have about 12 students, will be posting the job for program coordinator. Community research coordinator.
Jolene (Nikina): Chickens are still alive. We continually need casual workers. Shout out to Shelley, its really obvious for the work you do, at your party there was past clients, it shows how much you connect with them. Renovations at the building all look good.
Kimberly (HW): Updated on Muskwa, closed for inventory and clean up. There will be a Provincial Navigation system for referrals to all go through one central group. Then the person can be on a few waitlist with recovery programs. Shout out to everyone for doing a good job.

ACTION ITEMS: Review Action items.

FRIENDSHIP CENTER (Rose): Updating ROC on the meeting we had regarding Friendship Centre. This is something we have been wanting to see for over 20 years. The meeting we had provided us information … what we have been doing here over the last years in Pinehouse has shown how we fit into the Friendship Centre. Actions needed on our end, motions from KML and NVP, Community Profile. June 6th is the AGM, we are requesting for us to go present to be accepted by their membership.

NEW SCHOOL (Lynette): The committee is meeting regularly with NLSD, Joey and …. Are really lobbying on our behalf so that we can get what we are requesting. As of now the gym would be smaller, we don’t want to have less than before. Plans for parts of the school to be updated to meet our goals – trades focused, space for students and community to bring more training/education opportunities. We are asking for old portions of the school to be utilized for new initiatives, like early learning. We are waiting to hear budget updates from the Ministry.

Q-special needs in the new school, is it being factored in
A-Yes, it is something that Rose has advocated and pushed for.
Q-Sitting on two food security committees, the major things we are facing is the high amount of people going hungry and space to store food supplies. They’re wanting more support and seeking help. Asking for some agencies to host soup kitchens
A-Including this in Prevention so we can discuss it further. Rose updated on Damiens Grocer project, as part of the response to food sovereignty.

ELDERS GATHERING (Chris): Honouring Henry Smith and Rosa Tinker. Want to go over Cooking day. Sunday: Coop. Monday: RCMP/Victim Services/Clinic. Tuesday: Preschool/Daycares/KFN/Wellness. Wednesday: Both Schools. Thursday: PBN/KML/NVP/PHC. Need to know the Menus’s ASAP, hand in to Shana and make sure your food is ordered at COOP. We will try to restock the kitchen.
Finalized a lot of entertainment, we are continuing to work on bringing more things in.

MADD (Scott): 10:00 am start. Zoom presentation from MADD in stoon. Ordering ribbons. Requesting to have this be an in person meeting, as agencies have been waiting to help.

EVACUATION PLANNING (Kimberly): Asking all Management and Boards to begin discussions for evacuation risks. 1. Determine who is essential to continue working 2. TIL expectations of those deemed essential 3. Identify who is P1 in your workplace, can you continue. We are hoping for the best but planning for the worst, to be prepared.

GRANT/FUNDING (Kimberly): Wanted to keep this on the agenda, so that we can utilize any opportunity for funding that we can find. Even if we use a Prevention meeting to help agencies to fill them out.
Q-Wellness asking about summer students. They got a couple, NVP got a couple, KML approved 10.

COMMUNITY MANDATE (ONGOING) (Farrell): We went through the gathered mandates. Missing or incomplete: Big daycare, KFN, Coop, Clinic, High School. Reason this is important is it helps ups identify gaps and understand our community programs. Especially helpful in bringing in new programs.

RCMP (Scott): Meeting Monday, 1pm, at elementary. Parents invited. Invite to the group. Asking Spurge to help facilitate it.
WELLNESS (Haley): Girls group today, walk to get rocks.
WELLNESS (Hannah): Everything going ok. Hosting event this evening-Spa Day for clients. Shout out to all the Highway workers that are going above and beyond in trying to maintain the roads with everything that is happening.

NIKINA (Jolene): Chickens are back! Nikina is going through renovations, no new clients right now, fixing up the bedrooms. It looks so good. First meeting back from being at the hospital, lots of thanks for everyone helping.

REC (Chris): May 29th community clean up. Schools and Organizations. Few prizes. Poster will be out for cleanest yard contest.
H&W (Kimberly): Lodge update. Still waiting for an answer from the Grant we applied for from Federal Government. Coalition identified the lodge as one of their top 3 priorities. I’ve been meeting almost every week finalizing the blueprints and set up of the building. Continuing to work on it. No timeline for ground break.

ELDERS GATHERING UPDATE (Chris): Poster is going out. Honouring Rosa Tinker and Henry Smith. Part of our elders gathering is the Surrey River – fish and moose meat. Also, call out for workers (wood workers, runners, dishwashers, security workers). Selling tee shirts. First aid and hair cutting station, green building renovations, lots of cleaning on the grounds and setting up the kitchen area to prepare during the week before. Tipi teaching.
COMMUNITY CLEAN UP: May 29th, 2026. 1PM Agency. 3PM Schools. NVP & HW doing burgers and hot dogs.
MADD WALK: Confirmed May 21st. Delia has all the details and will update everyone during this week’s ROC meeting. Shirts will be ordered for that day – Chris.
COMMUNITY CALENDAR (Farrell): Ongoing – forever and ever. And still the same. Will be posting the calendar this afternoon and will updating the live version ongoing. Mandates due today – rough copy review on Thursday. Farrell will edit the mandate following the rough draft posting.
NEW SCHOOL PROJECT (Rose): Update. The Government is reconsidering the funding – as there are additional costs above the allotted amount. Mayor Mike attending a meeting on May 19th meeting, further updates afterwards.

OPEN FLOOR:
*Rosa – Looking at 4 generations from Rosa’s moms side. Genieve and Tom Sanderson. Found out relatives from Flying Dust. The relatives want to come for elders gathering to speak about our relations.
*May 11 Story Telling at Judilles. Phyllis facilitating. This could be a good opportunity to have her help bring in the relatives from Flying Dust/IleX.
*Discussion regarding youth vandalization. Community response to support the kids and parents. Meeting possibly tomorrow, waiting for confirmation.
*St. Anne Trip – Janelle. Need a fundraiser (grand in a hand), working on getting a charter bus, meeting taking place tomorrow at 4 pm.
*Mayor – Graveyard discussion. Ongoing problems with unmarked graves. Highlighted a need for better plan for burial sites. Shana brought up headstones, to help families mark their graves. Kim brought up tasking someone to do a map of known people to start with. Maybe starting on the new end until we can be confident about where older graves are.
*Kimberly – Ice safety. Suggested to Spurge to bring it to elementary to do ice safety at assembly or classroom presentations. New CO’s are open to doing presentations.
*Rosa – suggested the schools should be more involved in ROC/Prevention. Kim suggested we host a ROC meeting at high school, we tried before but conflicting schedules didn’t work out.
*Rosa – brough up Justice. This is something she mentions quiet often. We should have a community agency or person at court days. To talk to people, help identify issues, work together to support. A lot of time even youth go with no parents present.

OPEN FLOOR:
New School Project (Rose): There’s a committee working on it. Bc of our number of registered students it affects our allowable space, like the gym, will be smaller. The committee is advocating to have the same size gym along with other needs. Plans to reuse as much of the usable space as possible. Pushing hard to have a trades area, gym, walking track, and space for daycares. There is going to be an expense to the community, working with Coalition and Industry to pull funds together to ensure we have a school that is built to meet the needs of our children and community. Updating the community on the project, as it is a lot of work.

Gary Tinker Project (Rosalina): Committee working together on this project. Proposal due Monday. Drawings are drawn up, huge expense. Asking for prayers for the projects we are working on. The need for this is huge, there is over 60 clients, which doesn’t even capture the younger ones coming in.

Rosalina (KML): Updated on the projects we are already working on. Continuing to look for funds-ongoing.
Jen (Elem): Teachers are selecting families from each class for healthy food box, they did last week, and ongoing till tentatively May. Attendance is declining due to good weather. Doing a few draws K-3 to encourage attendance. Grade 3-6 another draw. Meat pack. Hoping this will improve our attendance. Few Trips in May-Heartlinked, Napesis Group. 6 Perfet attenders. Chris is relieved.
Rosa (Elder): Thinking about when we used to meet and there was a lot of people here, there’s a lot of workers not showing up. It isn’t good, the way our community is going we should be making more noise, talking and meeting more. Those working together encourage people to talk and listen. We need you in this community.
Bebe (Elder): I agree with my sister, she sounded good. Sat with youth, seeing youth walking around. We need to continue praying, it is good to ask for prayers. We won’t quit. We sit and share our experiences with people at Muskwa. Thank you for listening
Jen (Research): Last week Olivia and I had the opportunity to work with HS girls making ribbon skirts. Took us 4 days and did 1 day of art. They want to see more things like this.
Belinda (SHA-Addictions): Wendy McPhail stepped into Director position, no manager at the moment. Clerk position filled. Community educator position open soon. 35 on case load-18 active. 1 nurse on staff. Joanne stepping in when she can. Together in Light continuing with Caroline. Womans Support we have a good showing.
Shanz (NVP): Hired a town foreman, Cliff Maurice. Fire suppression started last week. Rodney and Archie crew bosses. Job opening for Project Coordinator. Approved for 2 summer students, will be working on more positions. Waiting to hear from GDI for park rangers and security. A lot of sewer blockages all weekend, we had to get a crew down from Stoon with a huge bill. Our lines got cleared a few years ago, so this is recently people are flushing things like baby wipes, toys etc.
Janelle (REC-Culture): Went on the lake with students, Muskrat trap setting. 2 elders showed the kids how to make them. A lot of slush. Planning a muskrat camp in the next few weeks. Doing a call out for Community Lunch/Supper tomorrow. More details to follow. Fish and moose meat.
Chris (REC): Cameron Golf Touney May Long. Surry River May 29-30th. Lots of discussion with land users, lot of ppl ice fishing. Slush is a problem. Ice in arena officially out this week, lots of clean up.
Farrell (REC): Healthy habits challenge 3 months ended last week. 16 people measured in 3 finished. Starting a walking challenge-100 Kms for 30 days. Running club-try to make a 5k run in Stoon in June.
Kimberly (KML H&W): Thankful for Rosa’s comments about people not being at the table during these meetings. Thankyou to everyone who is here showing up, we should put more pressure on agency’s who are not here to be present in the future. Muskwa is in a cycle right now. Nikina is full. WC is running well and continuing evening programming.

COMMUNITY LIVING MEETING: April 9th, 2026 @ 11:00 am. Community Living is coming to meet with the community to educate on what programs and supports they have available. Updating on the Gary Tinker Project (Group Home for disabilities). Drawings done, project moving forward to seeking funding.

ELDERS GATHERING UPDATE (Shana): Kitchen cooking day conversation.
Nominations-made everyone fill one out or they can’t leave the meeting.

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP: Tentative May 29th, 2026 *Who’s cooking*Coordinate with Schools*Bags. This date is not set in stone, needing the rest of ROC to be part of planning.

Spay and Neuter conversation Update (Shana): NVP teamed up with a rescue organization, Northern Transitional Dog Rescue NTDR. 1 Year agreement. They will be coming into the community to round up unleashed dogs. Spayed at owners expense, large discount on the surgery. Shana is looking for people to transfer them, NVP paying gas (need to be crated). Wanting to fundraise.

Lyn (KML Education): MIPP class *all have jobs with PBN when they are completed!!!! 2 away for 2 weeks working for PBN, others placed with Cameco. Starting Millwright program in May, 12 students will be accepted.
Shans (NVP): Hiring Town Foreman this week. The leak is plugged (water is fixed). Fire suppression dudes being selected today, starting Sunday. SUMA meetings next week, Mayor and Council attending.
Jolene (Nikina): Full capacity. Ongoing renovations, updating the building.
Kimberly (HW): Fully staffed. MLWC completion April 9th. Intake for next cycle April 13-14th.
Damien (Enviro): Hiring within this next week. Sent 4 people to Ottawa for Agriculture training, 2 of them high school students. First time they’ve been on a plane 😊
Rose (KML): Meeting Thursday to get more information on the Teacher Education program. Meetings with Denison, working to create job description for Liaison. Potentially be ROC Coordinator and Coalition Meetings.
Diana (CFNK): Rose got language revitalization grant. Diana can’t wait to do more storytelling on radio. Inviting everyone to give them information to announce events.
Ang (Teen Parent Support): Little ladies ongoing on Tuesdays @ WC. Women’s Support Group on Wednesdays @ Wellness. Together in Light on Mondays Starting April 13th @ Wellness. Teen Parent Support Group on April 17th, weekly @ Wellness.
Belinda (SHA-Addictions): Wednesday Women’s Support group, 10 attended, ongoing. Client case load at 30. Hannah (Wellness): Baby formula was delivered, they’ve been distributing it. Dropped some off in Ilex, will be taking some to Meadow Lake. Lots delivered to Food Bank. Community Baby Shower, date not set yet. Seeking donations for this event. Tentative land based camp June/July. Teekoom shampoo available.

ACTION ITEMS: Review Action items.

CHAIR for ROC/Prevention (Kimberly): We will be choosing at random the Chair for Prevention/ROC meetings. Used wheel of names...Kimberly ends up being chair for 2 back to back meetings anyways :P

COMMNUNITY CALENDAR (ONGOING) (Farrell): No new updates from the group to update the calendar. Rose suggested we make a yearly calendar that shows the big events, for the “slower” months is when we should focus on ROC programming.

COMMUNITY MANDATE (ONGOING) (Farrell): Some information still missing. Rose adding an appendices for when we have a loss in the community. MAY 1st hard date for mandates in.

ELDERS GATHERING (Chris): Lana offering for Vic Serv to bring in a booth again (popcorn/snowcone/thingie). Confirm date with Chris..probably Wednesday.
Working on cooking days. Confirming entertainment. Tentative Calendar going to be sent out soon.
Nominations for Elders went out to ROC – deadline was yesterday. Only one elder was nominated so far. We need more nominations in.
Trying to double the cultural events this year.
Next steps: confirming cooking dates with all organizations. Security. Workforce (coffee makers). Ordering new items. Renovate the green building.

KML REC (Chris): Updated the dates above
KML HW (Kimberly): MLWC completion April 9, intake the following week. Nikina is full.
BRRHA (Martine): Maintenance job is still open. Busy with application and housing.
KML (Rose): Still communicating with NLSD to confirm Teacher Education Program to start in the fall. When it is finalized we will be needing a coordinator. Just came back from a series of Strat Planning (KML/NVP), a lot of work we are doing, once we have more information we will bring it to ROC. We will be having a Denison Liason, could be part of helping with ROC as part of their position. Applied for a grant and was approved-to help support community events and adding more healing aspects to it.
SHA (Reanne): Working pretty much working out of the HS. Trips planned for June. Working with SHA.
RCMP (Scott): VS has started working on MADD walk. Setting the date.
HS (Spurge): NLSD Secured funding for working with students with neurodivergence. All the equipment has been coming in, feels like Christmas. Sensory things and class room machines.
CFNK (Diane): Started at radio this is her 3rd week.
CAMECO (Chelsea): Out of office all next week.
KML EDUCATION (Lynette): really good turnout for the ID day yesterday. We had over 30 people come in, but some of those people did multiple applications.
COUNCIL (Joel): Student summer programs, about 10. Fire suppression, . Water to be fixed in next couple days, waiting for parts from down south. Luckily the break is here. HS will be fully staffed after holidays. Still looking for community SCC person.
