As of next Tuesday, June 30, 2026, MRCNS will be amalgamating with Scotia College of Nursing to create a new multi-profession regulator.

With this change, this page will be merged with NSCN and rebranded to the new regulator’s identity.

We want to inform our followers that on, or shortly after June 30th, this page will no longer exist. Previous content will be available upon request. All followers will automatically be transitioned over to the new regulator’s page, with no action required.

The Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia (MRCNS) and NSCN have been instructed by the Department of Health and Wellness to combine/amalgamate into a single regulator when they transition to the RHPA in mid 2026. The single regulator will be responsible for the regulation of both professions of midwifery and nursing – a multi-profession regulator.

In preparation for the transition to the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), we are seeking feedback on proposed by-laws that have been drafted to support the effective regulation of the midwifery and nursing professions in the public interest.

In preparation of our amalgamation as a new multi-profession regulator, we are seeking eligible registered midwives to serve on statutory committees that will play a critical role in decision making and public safety.

We are committed to building diverse committees and encouraging expressions of interest from individuals with a wide range of lived experiences and perspectives, supporting equitable and balanced regulatory decisions.

We celebrate midwives and their important contributions to maternal and newborn health as a distinct profession.

As NSCN and the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia move toward amalgamation by mid 2026 under the Regulated Health Professions Act, we recognize and value the essential work of midwives across the province.

The Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia (MRCNS) and the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) were directed by the Government of Nova Scotia, in 2024, to amalgamate and become a new multi-profession regulator by mid 2026. This amalgamation is in line with the provinces new Regulated Health Professionals Act.

MRCNS and NSCN continue to collaborate closely to prepare for the amalgamation, with a shared commitment to regulating in the public interest and promoting public safety.
