ā€œManaging Anxiety on Thanksgivingā€- Mindfulness Monday

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians celebrating thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and spend time with family, create memories, be reflective of God’s goodness and of course eat lots of food šŸ˜‰

However, Thanksgiving celebrations can also be a time of triggers to some, especially if you have clinical anxiety. If you have an anxiety disorder, holidays like Thanksgiving can trigger racing thoughts, extra stress, and maybe even panic attacks.

If you choose to celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s look at some ways you can manage your anxiety while still enjoying yourself.

During the celebration:

Practice mindfulness and breathing: Use deep breathing, meditation, or other grounding techniques to stay calm.

Prevent Burnout — It’s Okay to Say No
Take breaks: Retreat to a quiet space if you feel overwhelmed.

Incorporate physical activity: A short walk or yoga session can help release tension.
Focus on gratitude: Shift your focus from anxieties to things you are thankful for to help manage negative feelings.

Establish an escape plan: Have a reason and a plan to leave early if needed.

Dealing with difficult family dynamics: Set conversational boundaries ahead of time. Ask open-ended questions to get others talking about themselves to shift the focus away from sensitive topics.

Practice Gratitude this Thanksgiving. ā€œGratitude, at its core, is the practice of recognizing and appreciating the positive aspects of our lives even when there are many challenges taking place.ā€
