Sometimes what looks like a communication breakdown between teens and parents isn’t a lack of communication at all.

Teens may stop talking when they feel misunderstood, overwhelmed, embarrassed, or unsure how to put their thoughts into words.

Parents may keep asking questions because they care and want to help.

Often, both people are trying their best, but just they’re speaking from different places.

Counselling can help build a bridge between teens and parents. Reach out if this resonates with you ❤️

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you.

Since announcing Next Steps Counselling, I’ve received so many kind messages, words of encouragement, referrals, shares, and support from this community. Every comment, message, and conversation has meant more than you know.

Starting something new is exciting, but it’s also a little vulnerable. Knowing there are so many people cheering me on makes a huge difference.

I’m grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me over the years and for the opportunity to continue supporting teens, young adults, and families in this next chapter.

I can’t wait to see where this journey leads.

❤️ Jenny

Disclaimer:
I do not actually have favourite clients.

I am, however, easily impressed by teenagers who can spend 20 minutes explaining something I’ve never heard of and somehow get me deeply invested in it.

☀️ New Teen Scene summer meet-up dates have arrived!

Teen Scene isn’t taking a break for the summer. We’ve added new dates and are looking forward to continuing to connect, hang out, and have some fun together.

Whether you’re a familiar face or considering joining us for the first time, we’d love to see you there.

Check out the new dates and register for the meet-ups that work for you.

As always, Teen Scene is a welcoming, neuro-affirming space where teens can show up as themselves, make connections, and be part of a community.

See you this summer!

Jenny 💚

Being neuro-affirming doesn’t just happen in therapy rooms, schools, or support programs.
It happens in the everyday moments.

It’s the cashier who gives someone an extra few seconds to process a question.
It’s the coach who notices a child is overwhelmed and offers options instead of consequences.
It’s the friend who accepts that eye contact isn’t required for connection.
It’s the neighbour who doesn’t judge a teen for wearing headphones everywhere they go.
It’s the community member who chooses curiosity over criticism.
Small acts of kindness can make the world feel safer for neurodivergent people.
A neuro-affirming community isn’t built through grand gestures. It’s built through thousands of small moments where people feel accepted, respected, and valued exactly as they are.

Outside of clinic spaces, we all have opportunities to create belonging.

They need people who can see past the shutdowns, the anxiety, the impulsive decisions, the avoidance, the meltdowns, and the “I don’t care” attitude.

Because most of the time, those behaviours are telling a story.

A story about wanting to belong.
A story about feeling misunderstood.
A story about trying to navigate a world that wasn’t built with them in mind.

I’ve spent years working with neurodivergent teens, and one thing I’ve learned is this:

The teens who act like they need connection the least often need it the most.

They need adults who stay curious.
Who listen before they lecture.
Who see their strengths.
Who make space for them exactly as they are while helping them grow into who they want to become.

That’s why I do this work.

Not to “fix” neurodivergent teens.

To walk alongside them while they discover who they are, what matters to them, and where they belong.

Attending The International Child and Youth Care Network Conversations in Motion and live conversation with Dr Lorraine Fox, one of the most respected and influential voices in Child and Youth Care was such a great reaffirmation of what it means to be a CYCP.

After nearly 20 years supporting children, teens, and families, I’ve made the decision to leave the public sector and dedicate myself fully to private practice.

As part of this next chapter, Coaching with Jenny is evolving into Next Steps Counselling Services. Welcome to my new space at 27 King St. In Brockville!

This isn’t a sudden change. It’s something I’ve been building toward for a long time. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside young people and families through challenges, growth, transitions, and milestones. That work has shaped who I am, and it’s what continues to inspire me every day.

At Next Steps Counselling Services, I’ll be offering OAP eligible neuro-affirming counselling and support for teens, young adults, and families, with a focus on practical strategies, meaningful connection, and helping people build confidence in themselves.

The name Next Steps reflects the heart of my work: helping people identify where they are, where they want to go, and what their next step might be.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, trusted me, referred to me, and encouraged me along the way.

Your belief in me helped make this possible.
Here’s to the next step. 💚
