Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Throughout my journey—as an advocate, a clinician, and someone who has worked in Mental Health and Addictions for more than 35 years—I have learned that su***de prevention does not begin only at the point of crisis.

It begins much earlier.

It begins with awareness.
It begins with connection.
It begins with noticing when someone is not quite themselves—and having the courage to ask, “Are you okay?”

And importantly, it begins with our language.

The words we choose can create shame and silence, or they can open a door. We do not need to have all the answers. We need to listen without judgment, take people seriously, and remind them that asking for help is a sign of strength—not weakness.

One compassionate conversation can help someone feel seen. One safe connection can create hope. And hope can save a life.

Today—and every day—let’s continue breaking the silence, challenging stigma, and creating communities where no one feels they must struggle alone.
