Birth doulas rely on their intuitive understanding of the pregnant and birthing body.
Here at Mother Matters, doula Abi (pictured here with a labouring client) combines her RMT and birthing knowledge to help ease discomfort and encourage the progression of labour. Through nurturing touch, movement, positioning, massage, and hands-on comfort measures, doulas help labouring families find moments of ease, release tension, and feel cared for throughout the birth process.
Doulas use touch to help relax uterine ligaments and fascia and to increase comfort hormones (endorphins). They use techniques like the double-hip squeeze while helping clients incorporate optimal and varied labour positions to create space for the descending baby.
Oxytocin is the key to powerful, coordinated contractions. When mothers feel calm, supported, relaxed, and safe, oxytocin levels increase and birth moves forward.
