Adam Young and his sons John, Daniel and Henry fought with the Butlers Rangers. They escaped the Americans and eventually settled beside the Grand River on the Young Tract, granted for their loyalty to the Crown. John married a Mohawk woman named Catharina Brant-Hill-Johnson Kayahkon. This marker, along Hwy 54, marks the Young Tract burying ground, aka Young’s Island Cemetery, aka Young Nelles Cemetery. I always thought it just marked a couple graves, but I found a list of everyone buried there, along with some information about Catharine.

It was a wonderful presentation by Michael Doxtater at today’s meeting. He spoke about the mixing of peoples, land tracts along the Grand River, and Doxtater land claims. It was very interesting. Too bad the weather was so nice and kept the attendance low. It was still an enjoyable meeting. Learned some new history of our people.

Just a reminder that our October meeting has been pushed forward due to the Thanksgiving weekend. It will be Oct 17, 1-4, at the main hall in the Community Centre. Michael Doxtater will be speaking on the Doxtater ancestral connection to the lands. See everyone then.

Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!
We had someone attend our meeting today, who said they just finished throwing out a whole bunch of family pictures….because she didn’t know who they all were and what to do with them. People, don’t do that! The Woodland Cultural Centre has a collection called “Relatives in the Attic”, and they take donations of pictures which they show every once in a while for people to identify. We will take them too, and see if our members can identify them, and pass them on to Woodland.
Old family records, books, or collections of genealogy and history information are welcomed by us too. Don’t throw out valuable information.
