The Neutral Adult 🤔Why do teens sometimes open up more easily to someone they barely know?

For some teens, talking to a parent can feel complicated, even when they have a close and supportive relationship.

They may worry about disappointing you, stressing you out, being misunderstood 📚 Sometimes there’s things happening at school or with their social lives that are too personal. Or maybe having a conversation turn into something bigger than they intended.

That doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong as a parent. 💛 Sometimes, having a neutral adult outside the family simply makes it easier to say what they’re thinking.

Teen therapy can give them a space to sort through what’s going on without feeling like they need to protect anyone else’s feelings.

Khaled works alongside teens to help them feel heard, better understand their emotions and experiences, and build healthier ways of communicating and coping. 🧠💬 Having another trusted adult in their corner can be an extra layer of support, not a replacement for the relationship they have with you.

If your teen has been more withdrawn, seems to be struggling, or just isn’t ready to talk with you yet, Khaled can help create a space where opening up feels a little easier. 🌱

Back-to-school season can be exciting for grade school students and university students alike! 📚 It can also raise questions about what is missing that could help students excel.

Maybe your student is struggling to keep up, their current accommodations are not working, or you are unsure how to advocate for what they need at school. That is where an Individualized Program Plan (IPP) can help 💡

When Amie works with a student and family around an IPP, the process can include reviewing the student’s strengths, challenges, learning needs, and current support.

This leads into a conversation about identifying meaningful academic and developmental goals, discussing appropriate accommodations and strategies, and helping families understand how to communicate and advocate within the education system. ✏️🧠

The the process and goals can look different at each stage of education:

📘 Elementary to High School
•Build strong foundational skills in reading, writing, and math
•Boost confidence, motivation, and a positive attitude toward learning
•Tailor learning goals to your child’s strengths and challenges through their IPP

🎓 Undergraduate to Graduate Students
•Get support managing heavier workloads and deadlines
•Develop strategies for exams, research, and major projects
•Build independent learning skills and stronger academic planning habits

If your child, teen, or young adult needs additional support this school year, Amie can help your family better understand their needs, navigate available supports, and build a plan for moving forward. 💛

🧠 Running a psychology clinic with ADHD has taught me to build systems around my attention, energy, and strengths so I’m not relying on memory, motivation, or willpower to keep everything moving.

1️⃣ I separate clinic-owner work from clinical work.
I use dedicated blocks for clinical work, CEO work, operations, and admin.

2️⃣ I keep everything in one central system.
When tasks are spread across emails, texts, sticky notes, software, and memory, things get missed. Every task needs a clear next step, an owner, and a deadline.

3️⃣ I limit my priorities for the day.
A long to-do list can create more distraction than progress. I focus on one must-do task, two important tasks, and a few smaller items. I ask: “What is the one action that would create the most progress or prevent the biggest problem today?”

4️⃣ I create dedicated times for staff questions and decisions.
Not every question needs an immediate answer. Grouping non-urgent decisions protects my focus while still supporting the team. One system that helps is a “Gavin Decision Queue,” where staff submit the issue, their recommendation, and the deadline.

5️⃣ I ask for recommendations, not just problems.
I encourage my team to use a simple format: Here is the situation. Here are the options. This is what I recommend. This is what I need from you. It reduces cognitive load and keeps decisions moving.

6️⃣ I give recurring responsibilities a regular home.
Finances, hiring, leadership, marketing, and planning are easier to manage when they happen at predictable times each week.

For me, the biggest facilitator in running a clinic with ADHD has been creating enough structure to stay present with clients, support my team, keep building the practice, and avoid burnout when things get busy.

Every week is not perfect, but these systems help me use my time and attention more intentionally. My hope is that my lived experience with neurodivergence continues to shape how I lead and how our team supports the people who come through our doors. 💛

Sometimes, you know exactly what happened. You’ve talked about it, thought about it, and maybe even understand it logically. 🧠 But your body and emotions can still react like the experience is happening all over again. 😣💭

That’s where Accelerated Resolution Therapy (A.R.T.) can be helpful. 🌿 A.R.T. is a short-term, evidence-based approach that uses guided visualization and eye movements 👀 to help the brain process distressing memories differently, so they don’t carry the same emotional intensity. It can be especially helpful for trauma, anxiety, difficult life experiences, and memories that continue to feel “stuck.” 💛

Steph incorporates A.R.T. into her work with adults when it fits their needs and goals. ✨ She also supports clients navigating anxiety, burnout, major life transitions, women’s health and wellness, parenting challenges, and relationship concerns. The goal isn’t to erase what happened, but to help it feel less overwhelming so you can move forward with more space, clarity, and confidence. 🌱💬

Curious whether A.R.T. or working with Steph might be a good fit? 🤍

Here’s my family ❤️ Carmen, Quincy, and me.

Family has always shaped the way I think about the work we do at McAtee Psychology.

Every family has its own personalities, strengths, challenges, communication styles, and ways of supporting one another. And sometimes, even the strongest families need a little extra support figuring out what comes next.

That’s a big part of what I want our clinic to provide. Whether we’re supporting a neurodivergent child, helping parents better understand their kid, working with a couple through a difficult season, completing an assessment, or helping an entire family communicate differently, the goal is practical support that actually fits their lives.

As an owner, I also try to build the clinic the same way I’d want people around me to feel supported: with trust, clear communication, collaboration, and room to be yourself. That applies to the families who walk through our doors and to the team doing the work alongside them.

And if nothing else, Quincy keeps us all grounded. 🐶

Becoming a mom can change almost every part of your life... including the way you see yourself. 🤍

There’s actually a word for that transition: matrescence 🤱 Much like adolescence, it describes a period of emotional, relational, and identity change. You may love being a mom deeply while also missing parts of who you were before. You may feel grateful and overwhelmed at the same time. You may even find yourself wondering, "Where do I fit into all of this?"

Steph works with mothers navigating these shifts, creating space for the parts of motherhood that don’t always make it into the highlight reel. She also supports individuals and couples through relationship challenges, anxiety, burnout, major life transitions, and difficult past experiences. When appropriate, she may incorporate Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and she also works with parents looking for practical strategies to better support their children and strengthen connection at home. 🌿

Support can look different depending on what season of life you’re in. Sometimes it’s about adjusting to motherhood. Sometimes it’s about your relationship, your past, your stress, or simply feeling like yourself again.

Book a **free 15-minute consultation** to see if Steph might be a good fit for you. 💛

There are a lot of reasons we love coming to work, but for each of us, it comes back to seeing people grow in their own way. 💛

For Amie, it’s seeing teens and young people succeed. Amie specializes in working with teens and loves helping them build practical strategies for school, social challenges, and at home, while giving them a space where they can feel heard, supported, and understood. 💛

For Alana, it’s helping children feel understood. Alana specializes in working with children, supporting them through counselling as well as psychoeducational and giftedness assessments. Her work helps kids and their families better understand how they learn, what they need, and where their strengths lie, so they can move forward with more confidence and clarity. 🧠✨

For Gavin, it’s creating a space where people feel empowered. That includes the clients who come through the door, but also the clinicians and staff who make the work possible. As the owner of McAtee Psychology, Gavin focuses on building a clinic where people feel supported, trusted, and able to do their best work, while creating an environment where clients can find care that genuinely fits their needs. 🙌

Different reasons for why we do it, but you can guarantee that we’re going to show up for you each and every day 🌱

Getting to celebrate your clients and support them through meaningful life moments is one of the biggest reasons we do this work. 💛

Getting to share those moments with the clinician across the hall is a pretty great bonus.

Around here, good news travels quickly. Whether it is a child feeling more confident at school, a teen opening up in counselling, a family finally receiving answers through an assessment, or a parent finding a strategy that makes home life feel a little easier, there is always someone nearby who understands just how much that progress means. 🙌

Alana gets to celebrate the children who build confidence, develop new coping skills, and begin to better understand their own strengths.

Amie gets to celebrate the young people who find their voice, strengthen their social and emotional skills, and feel more supported at home and at school.
Plenty of reasons to celebrate together. 🎉
