🔥 Calgary Industrial Leaders...

As thick smoke took over Southeast Calgary on Sunday evening following the recent East Calgary Landfill fire, poor air quality and heavy particulate matter posed real health risks to outdoor industrial/construction/logistics crews and even residents across the local neighbourhoods.

When environmental hazards strike, standard workplace safety isn't just about a text or email telling people to be safe—it’s about knowing how you and your team can properly select PPE and immediately recognize respiratory distress.

Are your team members trained to recognize the critical warning signs of severe air quality exposures and acute breathing emergencies?

Under the Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR standards, effective workplace response requires rapid, decisive action across four key areas:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Selection (Chapter 2): In heavily polluted or smoky environments, ensuring workers have and properly use the right barrier protection is your first line of defense against hazardous particulates.

Scene Assessment & Hazard Recognition (Chapter 3): Early detection of dangerous smoke levels, chemical irritants, or poor ventilation prevents minor exposures from turning into full-scale medical incidents.

Managing Breathing Emergencies (Chapter 7): Recognize early indicators of respiratory distress—such as wheezing, gasping, or chest tightness—and know how to assist workers with quick-relief asthma inhalers or activate EMS/9-1-1 immediately when breathing deteriorates.

Environmental Illness Response (Chapter 12): Poor air quality combined with heavy physical labor can rapidly accelerate heat illness and respiratory failure. Knowing how to immediately remove individuals from toxic environments and initiate cooling or oxygen support saves lives.

Keeping your workforce safe, compliant, and prepared requires more than just meeting minimum safety checklists—it takes hands-on, certified training brought directly to your site.

Has your workplace ever thought about providing training for the mental well-being of others in their environment? Well, you're not far off from many other customers who have reached out for Psychological First Aid training. Below is a description from the Canadian Red Cross on what this training is, who should take it, what you gain, and why it is important.

Feel free to visit my business page below for details on the class, and message me should you have any other questions.

"First aid for the mind is just as important as first aid for the body. Individuals suffering from high stress levels, burnout and suicidal thoughts are at an all-time high in areas such as workplaces, schools, indigenous communities and among professional responders.

Psychological First Aid is a resiliency-building wellness program that equips individuals in supporting themselves and others to cope with the effects of stress, loss, trauma and grief.

• Uses audience-specific case-based learning that focuses on self-care and personal protection
• Incorporates the latest evidence-based research on emotional, psychological, and social well-being
• Supports and complements workplace wellness education programs
• Online, in-class and blended delivery course options available

Who should take this training?

Psychological First Aid is for everyone. We all have strengths and abilities to cope with life’s ups and downs; however, everyone can be vulnerable under stress or in a crisis situation. Training in Psychological First Aid helps to reduce stigma associated with mental health crises and can reduce negative health outcomes for individuals by promoting positive conversations about wellness. With emphasis on establishing a connection with people in a compassionate non-judgmental manner, the training also helps to foster a positive work environment and culture of care in the workplace.

What makes Psychological First Aid different from Mental Health First Aid?

The broad preventative focus of the program. Mental Health First Aid focuses on primarily educating professional responders on the signs, symptoms, and care for various types of mental health issues. Psychological First Aid offers a daily aid to dealing with the stresses of life for individuals within a broad spectrum of communities."

Tragic workplace incidents—such as the recent fatality in Grande Prairie—underscore a stark, sobering reality for industrial operations across Alberta: compliance is not just a regulatory hurdle; it is a matter of life and death.

When safety training feels like it's falling short, the consequences extend beyond tragic human loss. Organizations face severe operational disruptions, regulatory penalties, massive insurance rate increases, and reputation-damaging OHS charges.

At Gallagher Safety & Training (GS&T), our mission is to eliminate these operational vulnerabilities through high-engagement, mobile-first safety and compliance solutions. We bridge the gap between basic check-box certifications and real-world emergency preparedness.

17/08/2026

When booking first aid and CPR training for your team, it is easy to assume that any online provider offering a fast certificate meets workplace requirements. However, taking training from non-approved platforms—such as US/International-based online providers can leave your organization non-compliant under provincial regulations.

What Alberta OHS Mandates for Workplace First Aid:

Under Part 11 of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code, employers must ensure workers are trained by an officially approved training agency.

- Mandatory Practical In-Person Skills Evaluation: In Alberta, 100% online-only first aid certificates are not recognized for workplace compliance. Approved workplace courses must meet CSA Standard Z1210, which requires hands-on skill demonstration (such as CPR compressions and AED placement on manikins) supervised by a certified instructor.

- Jurisdictional Recognition: Workplace safety is regulated provincially. While platforms like National CPR Foundation state they adhere to guidelines like AHA or OSHA, US regulations do not fulfill Alberta OHS legislation unless the provider is explicitly listed on the Alberta Government’s Approved First Aid Training Agencies registry.

- Recertification Rules: Alberta OHS regulations dictate that once a certificate expires, workers must take a full course rather than a recertification session.

PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS BEFORE YOU BOOK!

Before investing time and money into employee safety training, verify your provider with these steps:

- Check the Alberta Approved List: Verify that the training agency or its parent organization (e.g., Canadian Red Cross) is listed on the official Alberta OHS Approved First Aid Training Agencies registry.

- Confirm In-Person / Blended Delivery: Ensure the course includes an in-person, hands-on practical assessment.

Next Step: Want to audit your current team's certifications to guarantee 100% Alberta OHS compliance? Send us a direct message or email to schedule a compliance review for your workplace.

Why I ask every student to rate me on a scale of 1 to 10... 📊👇

Running a safety training business isn’t just about delivering slides—it’s about making sure that when a real emergency happens, the person who left my classroom feels 100% prepared to act.

After yesterday’s class, I pulled up the anonymous feedback metrics:

- 100% felt the pacing was "Just Right."

- 50% found the real-world stories and practical explanations to be the most valuable part of the day.

- 100% scored their post-class emergency confidence between an 8 and a 10.

- 75% left willing to drop a Google review to help others find us.

The takeaway? Asking for honest feedback can be nerve-wracking, but it’s the only way to grow. Seeing these numbers confirms that focusing on hands-on scenarios and real-world context actually lands.

Huge thank you to yesterday's group for bringing great energy and taking the time to share their thoughts! Every piece of data helps us make the next class even better.

"Knowing the rules" doesn't automatically mean "following the rules"—especially when physical discomfort gets in the way.

A fresh article published today in Occupational Health & Safety dives into a persistent industry issue: why workers on high-hazard sites continue to bypass or remove required PPE mid-shift.

The key takeaway? It’s rarely just a compliance or discipline issue.
Real-world factors like heat stress, ill-fitting gear, fatigue, and poor ergonomics cause workers to take shortcuts, even when they fully understand the risks involved. Simply handing an employee a safety manual or mandating equipment isn't enough if the practical, human-centric side of site safety is ignored.

At Gallagher Safety & Training, we focus on bridging the gap between compliance on paper and real-world ex*****on on site. Effective safety isn't just about passing an audit—it’s about building an active safety culture, understanding human behavior under stress, and ensuring teams are equipped with training that actually sticks.

If you want your team to stay safe, compliant, and ahead of the workplace knowledge curve, let's connect.

An $80,000 fine is a heavy price to pay for an OHS oversight.

A recent Alberta court conviction saw a major operator penalized under Occupational Health and Safety legislation following a serious workplace injury in Grande Prairie.

Cases like this serve as a critical reminder for every employer, safety manager, and operations lead: OHS compliance isn't just paperwork—it directly impacts your workforce safety and your bottom line.

At the same time, safety standards don't stand still. The 2025 Canadian Red Cross National Program Standards are introducing major updates—including strict minimum skill demonstration hours (like 7 full hours of hands-on skill practice for Standard First Aid) and updated evaluation competencies.

Ensuring your workforce is properly certified, fully compliant, and truly prepared for an emergency requires more than just ticking a box. It requires training that sticks.

Whether you need to upgrade your team's emergency response skills or ensure your workplace health and safety program stands up to scrutiny, Gallagher Safety & Training is here to support your team:

Gallagher’s "Stampede Safety" Tip: Midway First Aid 🩹🤠

We are reaching the middle of the week, and the energy at the grounds remains high! While everyone is focused on the rides and the food, I want to ensure that a minor injury doesn't cut your plans short.

Between navigating uneven terrain, standing in long lines, and maneuvering through dense crowds, minor trauma—like cuts, scrapes, and blisters—are among the most common reasons visitors need a hand at large outdoor events.

As a Red Cross Training Partner, I always recommend being "proactive" rather than "reactive." You don’t need a massive kit to stay safe; a "Stampede Pocket Kit" can save the day when you're far from the main medical tents.

Gallagher’s "Stampede Pocket Kit" Essentials:

Blister Pads: Your feet will thank you after a long day of walking.
Antiseptic Wipes: Keep wounds clean to prevent infection.
Hand Sanitizer: Essential for maintaining hygiene throughout the day.
Assorted Bandages: For those unexpected scrapes from crowds or gear.

📍 Your Stampede Safety Toolkit:

- Know how to treat minor wounds: Rinse the area with clean water, apply direct pressure if needed, and cover with a sterile dressing.

- Keep the Red Cross First Aid App handy: Get expert, step-by-step guidance for minor injuries right on your phone: https://www.redcross.ca/training-and-certification/first-aid-tips-and-resources/first-aid-app

Gallagher’s "Stampede Safety" Tip: Staying Alert & Being Prepared 🤠🛡️

With the Stampede is in full swing, the safety of all guests is more coordinated than ever! With a new state-of-the-art operations centre, 600+ cameras, and a historic joint-patrol agreement between the Calgary Police Service and Alberta Sheriffs, there is a massive team working behind the scenes to keep our grounds and downtown core safe.

Even with high-level security, the best first line of defense is you. Whether you are navigating the high-traffic transit stations or enjoying a concert, situational awareness is key. Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, and survival rates can double when a bystander acts immediately with CPR and an AED.

Don’t just follow the crowd—know your surroundings. Take a moment to locate the first aid equipment/stations (first aid, water stations, AEDs, eyewash stations, etc.) on the Stampede map. If you see something that doesn't look right, report it to Stampede Dispatch or on-site security.

📍 Your Stampede Safety Toolkit:

- Plan your travel: Use Calgary Transit’s extended 24-hour service to avoid the risks of impaired driving.

- Know before you go: Check for maps, venue info, and safety policies: https://www.calgarystampede.com/know-before-you-go

Get expert guidance: Download the Official Canadian Red Cross First Aid App for immediate help in any medical emergency: https://www.redcross.ca/training-and-certification/first-aid-tips-and-resources/first-aid-app
