Here’s an idea of what to expect in your toddler’s speech development:
6 to 12 months: Babbling with different sounds, responding to their name and showing interest in people
12 to 18 months: Saying first words like mama or ball, understanding simple instructions and pointing to objects
18 to 24 months: Using 50 words, starting to use two word phrases, following simple directions
24 to 36 months: Speaking in short 3 word sentences, asking questions and using me and you
If you’re noticing your child isn’t hitting these milestones, you can talk to a speech pathologist for ideas on how to support your toddler’s language development. More information up on the blog!

Wondering whether your child needs a speech assessment? Here’s a simple checklist to help you decide.
• By 12–18 months: few or no single words, limited babbling, or little eye contact
• By 2 years: fewer than 50 words, difficulty combining words, or trouble being understood by familiar adults
• By 3 years: unclear speech, short sentences that are hard to follow, or limited play
• Across ages: sudden changes, losing skills, or concerns from teachers/caregivers. Try simple strategies at home (modeling words, slowing your speech, repeating sounds) and watch for progress over a few weeks.
Assessment is recommended when concerns persist and affect social or learning situations. At Speech Boost in Calgary we offer in-person sessions with registered speech-language pathologists to give you clear next steps and supportive guidance. If you’re unsure, book a consult and we’ll help you figure out a plan. Book now: https://wix.to/YEUYiwZ

Nature walks are a great time to comment on the things you are seeing, doing, and hearing! Talking about what you are doing and narrating your day is a great way to expand your child’s vocabulary and help them learn new words and phrases. Next time you go for a walk, find 5 things to comment on and have fun pointing out new things with your child 🌸

Wind up toys can be great toy in speech therapy to help little ones become interested and work on requesting and commenting. These are great for practicing saying more to request playing with it again. We can use the word and the sign for more as we play!

These squishy monsters have been a hit with preschool age kids and school aged kids in speech sessions. They are great for modelling language as we hide the monsters and describe how they are the same and how they are different. Kids are always excited to get them to light up too!

Using quick games in speech therapy makes sessions fun and engaging. Games that pop are always popular and kids pick them again and again. This week I’ve been using this barbecue game to practice r sounds like grill, grab, barbecue, reach, roast, char, and fire. It’s a super fun game to have in your repertoire!
