🐎 Equine-Assisted Therapy in Alberta — complementary to talk therapy for deeper insight.

As a Registered Provisional Psychologist* near Calgary, I offer gentle, ground-based equine-assisted sessions at InStep Equine. Working alongside horses can provide real-time feedback on emotions, communication, boundaries, and relationships — helping build greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, confidence, and personal growth.

No riding or previous horse experience is required. Sessions may include grooming, groundwork, mindfulness, observation, and guided reflection in a calm outdoor setting. This type of therapy can be a supportive complement to traditional talk therapy for anxiety, stress, self-esteem, trauma, or life transitions.

🌿 What is Equine Assisted Therapy? (And How It Can Help You Heal & Grow)🐴

If you’ve ever wondered what equine assisted approaches are or how working with horses can support mental health, you’re not alone. This unique, hands-on approach to therapy is becoming more popular across Canada—and for good reason.

Equine-assisted therapy refers to a range of experiential approaches that may be incorporated into mental health treatment, where individuals work with horses alongside a trained professional to support emotional, mental, and personal growth.

Unlike traditional talk therapy (counselling), this approach allows you to learn through experience, connection, and real-time feedback—all in a calm, outdoor environment.

🐴 Why Are Horses Included in Therapy?🌲

Horses are incredibly intuitive animals. They respond to human body language, emotions, and energy almost instantly.

This means they appear to:

• Reflect aspects of what you’re feeling
• Respond to your communication style
• Bring awareness to patterns in behaviour and relationships

Horses don’t judge or overthink—they simply react in the moment. This creates a safe, honest space to explore things like anxiety, confidence, boundaries, and trust.

For many people, this can feel more natural and less intimidating than sitting in a traditional therapy setting.

🌱 What Happens During an Equine Therapy Session?🐴

In sessions at Instep Equine, sessions are tailored to each individual. You don’t need any horse experience to participate.

A session may include:
• Observing horse behaviour
• Grooming and connecting with a horse
• Groundwork (leading or interacting with the horse from the ground)
• Mindfulness and grounding exercises
• Natural horsemanship activities
• Guided reflection and conversation

👉 Riding is not the focus - the emphasis is on emotional awareness, growth, and confidence.

💭 Common Techniques Used in Equine Assisted Therapy

Equine therapy focuses on experiential learning, meaning you learn by doing rather than only talking.

Some key techniques include:

✔ Groundwork
Builds communication, leadership, and trust through hands-on interaction with the horse.

✔ Mindfulness & Body Awareness
Helps you notice how your emotions and physical state impact your environment.

✔ Observation
Watching horses interact can reveal insights into your own relationships and behaviours.

✔ Experiential Learning
Real-time experiences create deeper, longer-lasting change.

✔ Reflection & Processing
You’ll discuss what came up during the session and how it applies to your everyday life.

🌼 Who is Equine Assisted Therapy For?🏡

Equine therapy can support a wide range of people, including children, youth, and adults.

It’s commonly used for:
• Anxiety and stress
• Depression
• Trauma
• Self-esteem and confidence
• Emotional regulation
• Relationship challenges
• Personal growth and life transitions

It’s especially helpful if you feel like traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully worked for you.

🌾 Why Equine Assisted Therapy Works🐴

This approach combines:
• Real-life experience instead of conversation alone
• Non-judgmental feedback from the horse
• Connection and relationship-building
• Present-moment awareness

For some individuals, working with horses may help increase awareness of patterns and provide opportunities to practice new ways of responding.

✨ A Different Approach to Therapy✨

Equine assisted therapy offers a powerful alternative or supplement to traditional therapy by creating space for connection, awareness, and growth in a natural setting.

If you’re looking for a more hands-on, engaging way to work on your mental health, this could be a meaningful option to explore.
