When parents first come to me after an ADHD diagnosis, they often don't know where to start.

Medication?
Nutrition?
Therapy?
Lifestyle changes?

Here's what I want every family to know...

This doesn't have to be an either/or decision.

Nutrition isn't a replacement for medical interventions but it builds the foundation for success.

Children with ADHD deserve support that looks at the whole picture.

As an ADHD Nutritional Consultant, and a registered nurse with more than 20 years of experience, I believe the best care happens when we combine evidence-based strategies that meet each child where they are.

Every child is different.

Every family is different.

And that's exactly how support should be.

If I could give every parent of a child with ADHD one piece of nutrition advice, it would be this:

Don't start with supplements.

Start by asking:
Are they eating enough?
Are they eating regularly?
Are they getting protein at breakfast?
Are they drinking enough water?
Are they pooping regularly?

Those basics often have a bigger impact than people expect.

Build the foundation first.

These simple habits create the foundation that supports everything else.

Supplements can absolutely have a place but they're most effective when the basics are already in place.

Nutrition isn't about finding one magic solution.

It's about building healthy habits that support your child's brain and body every single day.

Comment ROADMAP for all 5 pillars of building healthy supports for your childs ADHD.

If you've been told that diet has nothing to do with your child's ADHD symptoms, you're not alone, and you're not wrong to question it. So many of the parents I work with arrive having heard nutrition doesn't matter from a doctor they trusted, even though their own instincts kept pointing somewhere....

☀️ If your child's ADHD seems "worse" during the summer...

You're probably not imagining it.

Without the routine of school, many kids experience:
🌙 Later bedtimes
🍪 More grazing and skipped meals
📱 More screen time
⚡ Less structure
😩 Bigger emotions

Summer doesn't need to be scheduled down to the minute.

But kids with ADHD often thrive when there's some predictable rhythm to their day.

Think:
✔️ Regular meal times
✔️ Consistent sleep routines
✔️ Outdoor play
✔️ Downtime between activities

A little structure can go a long way.

What's the biggest challenge summer brings for your family?

Hit follow if summer is feeling harder this year.

🍎 The Nutrition Questions Every ADHD Parent Should Be Asked

When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, conversations often focus on school, behaviour, and medication.

But I think we're missing some really important questions...

🍳 Are they eating enough throughout the day?
🥩 Are they getting enough protein?
💧 Are they hydrated?
🥦 Are they getting enough key nutrients?
💩 Is their digestion working well?

Nutrition isn't a cure for ADHD, but it absolutely can influence focus, mood, energy, sleep, emotional regulation, and overall well being.

It is one of the key pillars to building a strong foundation for the success of a child with ADHD.

It deserves to be part of the conversation.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by where to start, know that you don't have to change everything overnight.

Small changes really do add up.

🍎 One of the biggest nutrition mistakes I see parents make?

Believing they need to feed their child a "perfect" diet.

For kids with ADHD, eating consistently often matters more than eating perfectly.

The truth is, many kids with ADHD struggle with appetite, sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation around food, or simply remembering to eat.

If your child only eats a handful of foods right now, you're not failing.

Instead of chasing perfection, focus on building consistency.

✔️ Regular meals
✔️ Predictable snacks
✔️ Protein whenever possible
✔️ A calm, pressure-free eating environment

Small, sustainable changes almost always beat dramatic overhauls.

Nutrition isn't about being perfect, it's about helping your child feel their best, one meal at a time.

💬 Does your child struggle to eat consistently? I'd love to hear what's been hardest for your family.
