Heather Wood Art Therapy Professional Art Therapist with CATA; Registered Counselling Therapist with ACCT. In making art, we make something that didn't exist before.

I offer online & in-home art therapy sessions for adults & youth, & in-person groups around Campbell River/ƛəmataxʷ, BC I offer one-on-one online art therapy sessions & groups in-person (ƛəmataxʷ /Campbell River, BC), for youth & adults. I believe that to be well includes being curious and creative; open to learning and growing from new experiences. We practice creativity in therapeutic art-making

to foster creativity in life-living. Through creative play, we can find a new way. My experience ranges from youth to elders, with challenges including depression, anxiety, trauma, 2SLGBTQIA+, and life transitions, with a particular focus on grief and loss. As an art therapist, I strive to embody an aspirational ethic, focusing on wellness, strength, resource-building, and connection. In each art therapy session, I draw from a variety of theoretical models, frameworks, and techniques. The ever-evolving lens through which I practice art therapy is influenced by interpersonal neurobiology, transpersonal interconnectivity, integrated somatic embodiment, feminist theory, trauma theory, and compassionate mindfulness. All of this under the umbrella of a culturally sensitive, person-centred approach while embracing the fundamental healing and enlivening role of play, imagination, and creativity.

In my private practice, I offer one-on-one online and in-home art therapy sessions to adults and youth, as well as groups and workshops in/around Campbell River/ƛəmataxʷ, BC. I specialize in supporting clients through grief, loss, life transitions, identity exploration, stress, and trauma. I am an Professional Art Therapist with the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) and a Registered Counselling Therapist (RTC) with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT). Coverage for my services is available through certain benefits providers.

Art therapy, a form of psycho and somatic therapy, is adaptable and flexible to support clients in whatever state or stage they're in. Working with me, we focus on expressive, creative action rather than on making “Art,” so no special skills or fancy art materials are needed. In session, as we create, we make something that didn’t exist before. The therapeutic creative state opens us up, allowing room for things that didn’t exist before—new sensations, new connections, new questions, new skills, new healing, new hope. Through reflection, we gain possibilities and understanding that didn’t exist before. We surprise ourselves!

Depending on a client's needs, we may take a more somatic, sensorimotor approach or a more image and meaning making approach. I work from a harm reduction and culturally humble framework, embracing the fundamental healing and enlivening role of creative action and self-guidance. In each session, I draw from a variety of theoretical models, frameworks, and techniques, influenced by interpersonal neurobiology, transpersonal interconnectivity, integrated somatic and sensorimotor embodiment, feminist theory, trauma theory, compassionate mindfulness, and internal family systems.

I hold a Bachelor of Design Degree with Distinction from the University of Alberta and a Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. I have additional training in grief and loss support, trauma-informed therapy, cross-cultural therapy, and psychedelic experience integration. I am currently completing certification in sensorimotor art therapy.

I welcome referrals and prospective clients to contact me. For a complimentary 20 minute consultation to explore if we're a good therapeutic fit, book online at www.HeatherWoodArtTherapy.ca
