Your mind starts running through possibilities…
“What if something goes wrong?”
“What if I can’t handle it?”
“What if the worst happens?”
And even though those situations are imagined, the nervous system can still respond as though the danger is real.
That’s because the subconscious mind responds strongly to what is emotionally and vividly imagined, not only to what is actually happening in the present moment.
So the body reacts.
Muscles tighten.
Breathing changes.
The mind stays alert.
Over time, “what if” thinking can train the nervous system to stay in a constant state of tension and anticipation.
The good news is that these patterns can change.
Hypnotherapy can help the mind and nervous system learn calmer, safer, and more regulated responses so the body no longer has to stay stuck in survival mode.
Do you notice your mind going into “what if” thinking often? 👇
