In many parts of the world, bringing extra support into the home after a baby is born is not unusual.
Postpartum doulas, maternity nurses, newborn care specialists, night nurses and other forms of in-home support have long been used by families during the weeks and months after birth.
Here in Newfoundland, the idea of hiring a private nurse can still sound unfamiliar, and for many people, the words private nurse immediately sound financially out of reach.
But you may be surprised.
A night nurse does not have to mean months of care or an enormous financial commitment. Some families book several nights. Some book one night a week. Some arrange care before their baby is even born so they know support is already waiting for them when they come home.
And you do not have to be in crisis, completely exhausted or struggling to cope before you are “allowed” to ask for help.
As an LPN, I bring a nursing education and clinical experience into your home, but my role is also deeply practical.
I am experienced in caring for newborns, including very small and medically vulnerable babies, and in supporting families through the realities of those first weeks and months.
During an awake overnight shift, I can provide hands-on newborn care including feeding, paced bottle feeding, bringing baby to a breastfeeding parent for feeds, burping, diapering, settling and soothing, monitoring baby throughout the night, supporting safe sleep practices, washing and preparing bottles, and helping families understand what is normal, what may need closer attention, and when additional medical assessment may be appropriate.
But postpartum nursing care is not only about the baby.
The person who gave birth matters, too.
Recovery from pregnancy and birth happens while you are also expected to feed, comfort and care for a newborn around the clock. Whether you are recovering from a vaginal birth or C-section, navigating feeding challenges, adjusting to medications, experiencing anxiety, or simply running on very little sleep, having a nurse in the home can provide another layer of knowledgeable, compassionate support.
My role is not to come into your home and take over your family. It is to learn your preferences, respect your feeding choices and routines, and care for your baby in a way that allows you to genuinely hand over responsibility for a few hours.
You sleep. I stay awake.
I am already listening.
I am already watching.
I am already responding.
You do not have to sleep with one ear open waiting for the next cry.
That is the difference between having someone in the house and having protected rest.
Private nursing care may be more accessible than you think. I offer individual overnight bookings, reduced rates for families booking multiple nights, and flexible payment arrangements. Some families may also have private insurance coverage for eligible nursing services.
If you are expecting a baby, you do not have to wait until you are exhausted to reach out. Support can be discussed and arranged before your baby is even born, giving you one less thing to figure out during the postpartum period.
It Takes a Village | Night Nurse NL provides professional, compassionate, awake overnight newborn and postpartum care in the comfort of your own home.
If you are expecting, or know someone who is, my messages are always open to discuss what support could look like for your family. 🤍
