📚 Mystic Reads

This week’s Mystic Reads is Witches, Heretics & Warrior Women by Phoenix LeFae, published in 2022.

Apparently I am still not very good at my promise to venture away from books about witches and powerful women!

This book brings together the stories of women from history and mythology who challenged expectations, broke rules, spoke up, fought back or simply refused to be what society expected them to be. The women are incredibly diverse, including Circe, Anne Boleyn, Marie Laveau, Mary Magdalene, Joan of Arc, Boudicca and Harriet Tubman.

But this isn’t really a history book. LeFae uses their stories as a jumping-off point to explore our own relationship with power, voice, sexuality, courage and rebellion. There are also rituals, meditations and exercises throughout the book that invite you to actually work with the themes rather than simply read about them.

I enjoyed the concept, although at times I wanted more of the women’s stories and a little less of the self-help aspect. Some of the practices will resonate more than others depending on where you are in your own spiritual practice.

Given everything we’re exploring this year through The Northumberland Witch Walk, the idea that women labelled witches, heretics, troublemakers and rebels can still have something to teach us feels particularly relevant.

Mystic Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ 4/5

Perfect for: Anyone interested in witchcraft, women’s history, feminism, mythology and exploring personal power through spiritual practice.

Available now at Mystic Avenue.

✨ Embodied Consciousness Readings ✨
Saturday, September 12th | $160 per session

On Saturday, September 12th, Rev. Kim Etherington will be offering a limited number of one-on-one Embodied Consciousness Readings at Mystic Avenue.

This is not a traditional psychic reading. It is a deeply personal, co-creative experience that invites you to move beneath the surface of your thoughts and connect with the wisdom held within your body, emotions and consciousness.

Together, we may explore patterns that continue to repeat, emotions that have been difficult to understand, or something within you that feels ready to be acknowledged and brought into greater awareness. Rather than telling you what to do, the session creates space for your own insight, clarity and healing to emerge.

Every reading is different and unfolds according to what is ready to be seen, felt and understood in that moment.

Because of the depth of this work, only four sessions are available.

$160 per reading
Advance booking is required.

🔥 DARK GODDESS RISING 🔥
October 31 - November 1, 2026 | Castleton, Ontario

There are parts of women we have been taught to celebrate.

Our compassion. Our nurturing. Our patience. Our ability to care for others.

And then there are the parts we have often been taught to diminish.

Our intuition.
Our fierceness.
Our boundaries.
Our sensuality.
Our voice.
Our knowing.
Our power.

Dark Goddess Rising is a retreat for the whole woman.

For two days, a small circle of women will gather at the private Mystic Avenue Retreat Centre to step away from everyday life and explore the deeper, sometimes forgotten aspects of the Divine Feminine.

Held over Samhain, a time traditionally believed to be when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest, this weekend also gives us an opportunity to turn toward the women who came before us.

Our mothers. Grandmothers. Great-grandmothers. The women whose names we know and those whose stories have been lost.

We will honour our female lineage, listen more deeply to our own intuition and explore what happens when women gather together without being asked to make themselves smaller.

🔥 THE WEEKEND

We'll gather in women's circle for ritual, reflection, conversation and experiences created around the themes of sovereignty, intuition, transformation and personal power.

There will be fire and ceremony.

There will be movement, gentle yoga and sound.

There will be creativity, laughter, beautiful food and time to simply sit with other women and talk.

There will also be space.

Space to wander the property, walk the labyrinth, sit beside the pond, soak in the swim spa, enjoy the sauna or simply curl up somewhere quiet and breathe.

This isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about remembering what was already there.

🌙 YOUR RETREAT INCLUDES

✨ Two days of immersive programming
✨ All rituals, workshops & materials
✨ Gentle yoga & sound bath
✨ Samhain-inspired ancestor experiences
✨ Fire ceremony
✨ Chef-prepared meals & snacks
✨ Overnight accommodations
✨ Sauna & swim spa
✨ Labyrinth, pond, fire pits & beautiful natural spaces
✨ 20 private acres surrounded by nature
✨ An intimate experience limited to only 12 women

There are no additional programme or material fees.

Dark Goddess Rising isn't about becoming harder.

It isn't about rejecting softness.

It's about realizing that you don't have to choose.

You can be tender and powerful.
Compassionate and boundaried.
Vulnerable and strong.
Intuitive and certain.
Soft and fierce.

There is room for all of you here.

Come sit around the fire.

Come gather in circle.

Come honour the women who walked before you.

Come remember the woman you already are.

🌿Sunday Reflections | Good Without God🌿

Years ago, I read a book called Good Without God, and while I don't remember every argument the author made, the concept behind the title has stayed with me. Can we be good without God?

There is an idea within some religious traditions that morality ultimately comes from God. Without belief in God, what compels us to be kind, honest, generous or compassionate? Some organized religions take that even further. It isn't enough to believe in a God. You must believe in the right God, understand God in a particular way, and sometimes follow a particular set of teachings in order to be considered a good or moral person.

I completely reject that idea.

I am, of course, a spiritual person. My own understanding of God, consciousness and the Divine is an important part of how I experience the world. But I don't believe my spirituality is what prevents me from harming other people. I don't need the promise of a reward or the threat of punishment to make kindness worthwhile.

If the only reason we behave morally is because we believe someone is watching, is that really morality?

I think the desire to be a good human being comes from somewhere much more fundamental. We are social beings. We love. We empathize. We understand suffering because we have suffered. We experience joy in connection. We have an innate desire for our lives to matter, and for the mark we leave on the world to mean something.

Most of us want to believe that because we were here, something was made a little better.

Perhaps someone felt loved. A child felt safe. An animal was cared for. A stranger was treated with kindness. Someone who was struggling felt less alone. Perhaps we built something, taught something, created something, protected something, or simply made another person's difficult day a little easier.

To me, that is purpose.

And purpose does not require theology.

There are deeply compassionate atheists and deeply compassionate religious people. There are also people who profess tremendous devotion to God while behaving in ways that are cruel, judgemental or harmful. Clearly, belief itself is not what determines the quality of our humanity.

In fact, I think there can be something profoundly spiritual about choosing goodness without needing anything in return. Not heaven. Not karma. Not approval. Not recognition. Simply because reducing suffering and increasing love feels like the right way to move through the world.

Maybe God is part of that equation for you. Maybe God isn't. Maybe you call it consciousness, humanity, love, nature, the Universe, or nothing at all.

I am far less interested in what someone believes than I am in what their beliefs produce.

Do they make you kinder? More compassionate? More willing to listen? More concerned about the suffering of people who are different from you? More willing to examine yourself? More likely to leave the world better than you found it?

If they do, wonderful.

But if your understanding of God gives you permission to diminish, exclude, condemn or harm others, perhaps the question isn't whether someone else can be good without God.

Perhaps the more important question is what good means in the first place.

For me, goodness isn't about earning something after this life. It is about what we do with the life we have now.

We are all leaving something behind in the people whose lives intersect with ours. A collection of moments, actions, words and memories that ripple outward long after the moment itself has passed.

Whatever you believe about God, perhaps that is reason enough to choose kindness.

To leave a good mark.

To have been here, and because you were, to have added a little more love to the world. 🌿

May you be blessed,
Rev. Kim Etherington

Hey Colborne, this one's for you!

I grew up in Colborne, ON and I talk to dead people 😁

I always felt different, weird and like I didn't fit anywhere. I still do feel that way but at least I have the Spirits to talk to (haha)

As a kid, I didn't really know how all this worked. People ask me all the time if I've always been a Medium and my answer is yes and no. Long story short, my grandpa needed to pass away for it to all make sense in my 30's. (Grandpa also lived in town)

A couple of years ago I was invited to offer readings at Mystic Avenue downtown and I had a moment of panic. I wondered if I would be accepted back to town as "Jeni the Medium" after all these years. Well, I was and it was a truly healing experience for me! One that was a catalyst in my own journey to reclaiming lost parts of myself.

After the event, I stayed the night in town at a peaceful Airbnb in that subdivision that didn't event exist last time I drove through. (Ya know, up behind Streamside) and Spirit came to me with a vision...well a bunch of visions actually.

I saw my younger self. Walking the streets, sitting in the park, in my backyard, at school and at my friend's houses except this time I saw what I couldn't see then.
I was shown all the times Spirit was trying to get my attention in those moments and how I just saw it as normal, ignored them entirely or was completely oblivious. Yet, Spirit was there. Walking beside me, following me, watching over me and learning to use my mind and soul for communication. It was such a cool experience! Almost like watching a movie of my own childhood.

Spirit showed me myself and reminded me that no matter what, I am free to be me in my Mediumship work. That I must remain authentic to who I am and keep peeling back the layers of who I thought I had to be especially to be "spiritual".

I've spent the years since then asking myself big questions about who I am, who I am becoming and who I want to be in the future and I thank The Spirits of little old Colborne for the valuable insights I have received.

This October I'll be back again for another event at Mystic Avenue and I can't wait. If you want to come see me here's the link for a ticket:
https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/1994902379719?aff=oddtdtcreator

I'll give 1 free ticket to the first person that can tell me what street my childhood home (Pictured here) is on. Bonus points if you know the number too!
