Prevention is key - and typically less time consuming and less costly than rehabilitating AFTER the injury.
Physiotherapists help people recover after an injury, but they also play a vital role in helping you prevent injuries before they happen. While not every injury can be avoided, small, consistent habits can make a big difference in keeping your body strong, resilient, and ready for the activities you enjoy.
Warm up with purpose: A dynamic warm-up increases blood flow, activates key muscle groups, and prepares your joints and nervous system for the demands of activity
Build strength consistently: Resistance training improves muscle capacity, bone health, joint stability, and movement quality, making your body more resilient to everyday activities, work, and sport
Progress gradually: One of the most common contributors to injury is a sudden increase in activity or training load. Increase intensity, duration, or frequency gradually to give your body time to adapt
Prioritize recovery: Adequate sleep, hydration, nutrition, and rest are essential for tissue healing, muscle recovery, and reducing the risk of overuse injuries
Pay attention to persistent pain: Mild muscle soreness after activity is normal, but pain that persists, worsens, or changes the way you move shouldn't be ignored. Early assessment can often prevent a minor issue from becoming a more significant injury
Injury prevention isn't about avoiding activity, it's about preparing your body to meet its demands. A physiotherapist can assess movement patterns, identify modifiable risk factors, and develop an individualized plan to help you move efficiently, stay active, and continue doing the activities you enjoy.
