Lymphedema is so much more than “just swelling.” 🤍
Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition that occurs when the lymphatic system isn’t able to properly transport lymph fluid. Over time, this can lead to persistent swelling, heaviness, tightness, discomfort, and changes in the affected area.
There are two main types:
✨ Primary lymphedema — caused by abnormalities in the development or function of the lymphatic system. It can be present at birth or develop later in life.
✨ Secondary lymphedema — develops when the lymphatic system is damaged, which can occur following surgery, radiation, trauma, infection, or other factors.
And while there isn’t currently a cure for lymphedema, it can be effectively managed.
Treatment may include:
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
• Compression therapy
• Exercise and movement
• Skin care
• Ongoing maintenance
One of the most important things to remember is that early recognition and appropriate management matter. If you’re experiencing persistent or unexplained swelling, it’s worth speaking with your healthcare provider and seeking assessment from a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT).
🚨 If swelling is accompanied by sudden redness, warmth, significant pain, or other signs of infection, seek medical attention promptly.
