In this ever-changing world of GLP-1's, ChatGPT and other interventions for weight loss, there are so many ideas and voices clamoring for attention. The goal is to develop a healthy relationship with food and your body, possibly heal a damaged relationship with food, exercise and body image. The jury is out on how some of these alternate means can help or potentially harm. One thing we know for sure is that developing a healthy relationship with food and your body is effectively done through working with trusted professionals who have years of experience in this field. Even if you lose weight through some of these means, if you still hate your body or are obsessed with what you eat, you will not truly walk in freedom. Consider the benefits of working with a therapeutic team to heal your relationship with food, movement and body. Kris Isaac, our Registered Dietitian, alongside of Beth Murray and Caroline Ciano are Eating Disorder Specialists. We can help you on this journey.

Little tired of the rainy, overcast weather? Remind yourself that emotions are temporary and change just like the weather. Make a point of doing something enjoyable, connect with a friend in person or by phone, and spend some time outdoors and think about the benefits of the rain -- happy farmers, fewer forest fires, lush greenery, and refreshment to our land. (And yes, looking forward to the sunshine that will come!).

Imagine sitting on a park bench with yourself ten years from now -- what would your future self have to say to you? How might they encourage you, challenge you, or appreciate you?

Did you know that you can actually retrain the way you think? Our brains are 'plastic' and allow us to run new ruts in them. By catching negative thoughts -- often intrusive, unwanted thoughts that are harsh, shaming or critical -- and replacing them with positive, helpful thoughts, we are actually changing our neural pathways/circuits.

The power of the brain is amazing -- and our brain wants us to feel better and know that we have agency over ourselves. In other words, the brain wants us to run new ruts and create helpful neural pathways rather than letting old critical parts repeat unhelpful shaming messages.

Why do we have such a tendency to beat ourselves up or be mean and harsh with our self? One of the most powerful things we can actually do is to befriend ourselves rather than berating ourselves. It's a choice we make -- often fuelled by what we believe at our core. I can choose to befriend myself, even if my habit is to berate. I can start shutting that cruel voice down and become a friend and support to myself. Shifting from 'berater' to 'befriender' is a mindset change that brings freedom and healing. If you wouldn't tolerate someone standing there abusing you publicly, why would you allow someone to do it to you internally? Stop the dialogue! Treat yourself with kindness and be a friend to the person you have known your whole life.

“Pain denied is pain multiplied” Dr. Anita Phillips in her book The Garden Within. When we stuff or deny our emotions, particularly our painful ones, they don’t just go away. They go down into us and get stuck or come out sideways. Emotions are meant to be processed and moved through — like a wave that comes and goes. Learn to process your emotions so they function the way God intended — to come and go and give you information about your valid needs.

Feeling like you can't cope? Might be time to work on increasing your coping strategies. Here is just one of many tools to get in your toolbox.
