Did you know that you can actually retrain the way you think? Our brains are 'plastic' and allow us to run new ruts in them. By catching negative thoughts -- often intrusive, unwanted thoughts that are harsh, shaming or critical -- and replacing them with positive, helpful thoughts, we are actually changing our neural pathways/circuits.

The power of the brain is amazing -- and our brain wants us to feel better and know that we have agency over ourselves. In other words, the brain wants us to run new ruts and create helpful neural pathways rather than letting old critical parts repeat unhelpful shaming messages.

This month’s feature is the Murray Therapists! Beth Murray and Cathy Murray—no relation other than being two exceptional therapists at Fresh Hope Counselling—are each accepting a limited number of new clients right now. You can learn more about them on our website under Our Staff.

Beth Murray (Registered Psychologist) has an extensive background in supporting clients with eating disorders, chronic pain, mood disorders, trauma, and faith-based counselling. She helps clients move through seasons of struggle and discover renewed hope, healing, and strength.

Cathy Murray (Registered Clinical Social Worker, MSW) brings over 30 years of experience helping clients navigate difficult times, including stress, anxiety, depression, and other life challenges. She supports individuals and families in improving relationships at home and work, and in addressing concerns related to children’s well-being and emotional health.

Both Murray Therapists are gifted counsellors—warm, compassionate, and able to connect deeply with their clients. Their years of experience and advanced training help guide people toward a better quality of life and healthier relationships with themselves and others.

You can book a free 15-minute consultation with either Beth or Cathy to see if they would be a good fit for you. Call our office at 780-487-3456 or email [email protected].

Why do we have such a tendency to beat ourselves up or be mean and harsh with our self? One of the most powerful things we can actually do is to befriend ourselves rather than berating ourselves. It's a choice we make -- often fuelled by what we believe at our core. I can choose to befriend myself, even if my habit is to berate. I can start shutting that cruel voice down and become a friend and support to myself. Shifting from 'berater' to 'befriender' is a mindset change that brings freedom and healing. If you wouldn't tolerate someone standing there abusing you publicly, why would you allow someone to do it to you internally? Stop the dialogue! Treat yourself with kindness and be a friend to the person you have known your whole life.

“Pain denied is pain multiplied” Dr. Anita Phillips in her book The Garden Within. When we stuff or deny our emotions, particularly our painful ones, they don’t just go away. They go down into us and get stuck or come out sideways. Emotions are meant to be processed and moved through — like a wave that comes and goes. Learn to process your emotions so they function the way God intended — to come and go and give you information about your valid needs.

Feeling like you can't cope? Might be time to work on increasing your coping strategies. Here is just one of many tools to get in your toolbox. Practicing good sleep habits helps to protect your body, mind and soul from living in activation and having no space or margin. A kind thing to do for yourself is to prioritize getting some sleep.

Feeling blessed comes from an attitude of being grateful. Recognize the things in life that make you feel appreciative. Mull them over. Reflect on them. Write them down or speak them out loud. What are you grateful for today?

Feeling stuck? Sometimes we get in a rut and it doesn't feel great. One of the first steps towards getting unstuck is to make a decision. Once the decision is made, then you can put it into action. Just like the old days when a truck would get stuck in the mud, we'd get behind it and start pushing -- get the truck rocking so it could get some momentum and traction. Then you'd get unstuck. Don't over think it -- make a decision and get 'rocking.' There is no perfect decision, only the one that gets you moving in a different direction.

We are some of the most stressed out people and it's impacting our mental and physical health. Increasing your awareness of self is essential to making positive changes. We are integrated beings -- physical, mental, emotional and spiritual -- often functioning in survival mode instead of thriving. Counselling can help you learn skills to move your nervous system out of activation and into regulation.

Domestic violence (abuse within the family unit) is not acceptable. Regardless of gender, violence towards one another is wrong — including verbal, mental, emotional, spiritual, sexual and physical abuse. There are a lot of supports and services available to help. Calling 211 is a good starting point. We must continue to speak out against it and break the stigmas.

A process of change can be daunting. We might not even know where to start. It begins with self-awareness -- that's the first step towards making real change. It takes place one step at a time. Increasing your self-awareness includes observing what is going on in yourself. Name the emotions you are feeling and explore the patterns that you fall into. It's important to do this without judging yourself. Just notice, become curious and be increasingly honest with yourself. Do the hard work -- make real change, one step at a time.
