Pagans in Recovery YEG

Pagans in Recovery YEG Is the Edmonton area ready for a Pagan or Heathen specific addiction recovery group? I am ready to start one if there is an interest.

This is a proposed group for Pagans in Alberta, Canada's Capitol Region. If an interest is expressed we can start meeting in person.

Dagaz can be an 180 degree turn, it can be the light at the end of the tunnel. It can be a transition out of darkness, or the hight of the sun in the middle of the summer half of the year.

Othala (oh-thah-la)
Symbolizes: Inheritance ~ Ancestral Property ~ Sacred Enclosure
The primary aspect of Othala to consider in the paradigim of addiction recovery is its aspect of ancestral property, both in a literal and metaphorical sense.
The literal sense: Bluntly, if you live as a strung-out hippie, getting by just enough to get high, what will you ever be able to leave behind for the future? Through the “Ancestral Property aspect is often taken to be one’s DNA, there is a worldly meaning also. If you trade away wealth that could serve your folk for nothing more than a feeling, what sort of person are you? T
How does your behaviour change you in a way literal enough to be passed on to your heirs? The inheritance of a proclivity toward addiction is not fully understood, but all evidence points toward inheritace as a factor. There is a very real possibility that your self-indulgence could become the rot of an undeniable, literal, ancestral curse. Concider the image of a newborn baby convulsing from he**in withdrawal and ask yourself if that is how you want your child’s life to begin.
Less common aspects to consider:
Othala is a representation of Odin, in the All father aspect. This is an aspect of Oneness; being all things. Often addiction is a mechanism to cover or suppress some portion of oneself. A Major key to permanently beating addiction is to discover this disharmonious aspect and either change it or accept it, and bring it into the whole, Only you can decide which.
Again, representing Odin is the aspect of the Seeker for wisdom. Recovery is becoming, plain and simple, and Becoming is not about being given answers, but finding the right questions.
• Where will the path you are on take you?
• What will you leave behind?
• What portion of your potentialis this life unlocking for you
• Do you believe that your everyday choices not only affect your orlog, but that they create literal changes within you that may adversely affect your off spring?
• What drives you to use drugs?
A futher, less common aspect to concider is the position of Othala at the end of the third Ætt. In a sense, this in itself is representative of ending.
No beginning can come without an ending, so ask yourself, “What is my exit strategy’ from addiction?
Remember that the age of Baldr only comes after Ragnarok; a massive, catastrophic upheaval of the entire universe, not a gradual weaning away of the undesirable. Sutr and his minnions are not to be wished away or gradualy pushed, bt fought to a standstill and beaten back!

Heilvegr (Page 89)
Othala is the rune of heritage, the ancestral legacy, not just of Blood Gift and all it entails, but also of our lore and traditions. In Othala we recognize the gift of the Ansuz and the heroic example of all who have come before us.

Ing was first seen by men among the East-Danes,
till, followed by his chariot,
he departed eastwards over the waves.
So the Heardingas named the hero.
- Anglo Saxoon Rune Poem.

The Ing rune is likely related to Yngwie-Freyr, a god associated with Virility. Many say he is related to Fertility, but if you understand linguistics, Feminine things are Fertile, male things are virile, and Fricco/Freyr is often depicted as virile.

This can be a rune of beginnings, advancement, and potency. Think of how you can make yourself potent.

Laguz (lah-gooz)
Symbolizes: Lake ~ Passage to and from life ~ Vital Power
Laguz is a rune that encompasses life and power. Our power comes from being tru to the virtues and standards of the Goðin. To recognize our faults and addictions is to be tru. Only when we find this truth in ourselves can it extend to our families, friends and the earth we live on.
We must constantly and consciously strive toward great heights. We call this ascending. Becoming. It can be trying at times, but it’s worth it, and as you grow you begin to realize that perseverance is key. Throughout the passages of life one must seek to shed his old life, to improve. This transition then naturally leads to right action, which is part of the six-fold goal.
To understand and recognize your faults is a part of this passage. We keep seeking knowledge and wisdom. To harvest that knowledge and replant the seeds for future generations is our highest purpose.
We look upon Odin as the greatest example. Odin sacrificed himself to acquire great wisdom. So why can’t we sacrifice in some way to better Become, and live by the virtues for all to follow? To walk tall and proudly, setting childish ways aside. We should want to be a cut above the rest! But power will not just be handed to you. It demands a right action, individually and collectively. We must never loose sight that each of us represents the whole.
This brings me back to my point of being tru to oneself. One must strive to be virtuous by way of deed, and as a consequence, others will see a better way for themselves. It is simply not enough to talk the talk. Our passage is worn by our footsteps. We know we are not perfect. We may fall along the way. Yet is it not our way to relentlessly persevere? Get up! Stand in the face of adversary and a society that can be viciously hostile. This means to process the first virtue, courage. We courageously face conflict at any cost. We do not follow, bow down, or conform to destructive forces we face with our addictions. What a disciplined mind it takes! Heil Odin, Týr and Thor!
To be Ásafolk is to feel a connection to our kin and be naturally inclined to act on it. We pull our folk up and stand with them in good times and bad. This connection brings us to a place where we will give support physically, spiritually and materially to our kinsmen and kinswomen. In order to do this we employ the noble virtues of hospitality, loyalty, and honor. We should strive to live not just for ourselves, but for the greater cause folk, family, and future!

Manaz – Mankind
Some depict the Manaz rune as two people in an embrace. Ideally this image could be possibly a person in recovery thanking their sponsor with a hug.
As a sponsor remember to take care of yourself first. Never put your self in a position where the rescuer needs to be rescued. When mentally or spiritually depleted to the point where a sponsor has nothing, they have nothing to offer a sponcee. And never be a financial burden on a sponsor, they are not your banker. As the Icelandic Rune poem states, Mankind should be the delight of man, do your sponsor proud, advance up the steps. Be the [hu-]man that the Anglo-Saxon rune poem speaks of: Be the joyous [Hu-]man who is dear to his kinsman.,

This Rune only exists in the Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem, which states:
"A horse is a joy to noblemen in the presence of warriors.
A steed in the pride of hoofs,
When rich men on horseback bandy words about it;
and it is ever a source of comfort to the restless."
-
One of the best ways to learn the meanings of the runes is to read the rune poems and reflect on them with an iron age mindset or world view. Most of us that live in cities may not have the same relationship with a horse that a Viking age nobleman might have with a horse. But there are layers of trust, understanding and reliance, between the two, that many of us have not experienced. One relationship that may come close for us is the relation ship that a sponsor can offer.

Berkano (bur-khan-o)
This rune at a glance seems to have little significance with addiction and recovery. Yet if you dive deeper you can correlate both aspects of berkano, the birch tree and the divine powers.
First we will start with the stave shape. Three runes make up Berkano: The first is Isa, the second is wunjo, and the last is kenaz. Now, as feminine powers go, these runes are the epitome of a woman. Isa can represent the solid unwavering nature of women in our lives. This is evident for those of us who are in prison. Often our mothers, sisters and wives stick around even when it seems the whole world has turned their backs on us. Wunjo shows both positive and negative aspects in Berkano. It symbolize the joy and harmony women can bring, as well as the chaos and harm they have the potential to inflict. And last is kenaz, which bridges the gap between harmony and chaos, showing us that no matter the result we will leave knowing more about ourselves and the world around us.
