“Time heals all wounds.” “Be strong for the kids.” “Keep yourself busy.”
Most of us learned these ideas about grief early in life. They were said with love, but they leave us stuck. The Grief Recovery Handbook names six common myths:
1.Don’t feel bad. We’re taught to push sad feelings away instead of feeling them.
2.Replace the loss. “You’ll find someone else” skips over the heart that’s hurting.
3.Grieve alone. We hide our pain so we won’t be a burden.
4.Be strong. We hold it together for everyone else and set ourselves aside.
5.Keep busy. Staying distracted only postpones the pain.
6.Time heals. Time passes, but healing comes from the actions we take.
Grief follows any loss: a death, a divorce, an estrangement, or a dream that ended. You don’t have to carry it alone or simply wait it out.
