Rise Retreats at Valkyrie: Being “Herd”

Leadership & Personal Growth with Horses

- Learn About Leadership by Working Alongside Horses

Horses notice the things people often miss. They respond to body language, consistency, confidence, and clear communication. They don’t care about job titles, resumes, or the words we choose.

At Rise Retreats, you’ll work with horses from the ground while exploring how you communicate, make decisions, handle pressure, and build trust. The horses aren’t trained to “teach” leadership. Instead, their natural responses create opportunities to reflect on your own habits and interactions.

There’s no riding and no horse experience required. Every activity is guided and designed to be approachable, whether you come on your own or with a workplace team.

Whether you’re stepping into a new leadership role, managing a team, or simply looking to better understand how you show up around others, these sessions offer time to slow down, observe, and practice new approaches in a different environment.

Alanna Berdan is the owner of Valkyrie Equestrian Centre and has spent more than a 15 years working with horses and the people who care for them. Running a boarding facility has meant helping clients navigate difficult conversations, build confidence, solve problems under pressure, and create trust: both with horses and with one another.

She combines practical horse knowledge with facilitated discussion to create an environment where people can experiment, reflect, and learn without judgment. The horses provide immediate, honest feedback, while Alanna helps participants make sense of what they’re experiencing and connect it to everyday leadership, communication, and relationships.

Failure can be incredibly challenging, often difficult to accept and hard to stomach. We are conditioned to believe that failure is something we should always avoid, as if it somehow makes us less worthy as individuals. Many of us tie our self-worth to our successes or failures, continuing the cycle of an outdated pattern rooted in a fixed mindset. This mindset promotes linear thinking and does not reflect our true nature as creative, dynamic beings.

Failure is an essential part of our journey toward success. It is what prompts us to learn and to grow, becoming one of the most important aspects of our human experience. Every time we fail, we have a valuable opportunity to learn something new. These moments broaden our understanding and create depth within us as individuals. Failure is also a sign that we are truly putting ourselves out there, leaning into challenges, and embracing pressure. Pressure reveals more about who we are than our achievements ever could. Each time we fail or fall down—and every time we rise—we become a new, greater, and better version of ourselves. Our success as individuals is not defined by how easy our journey has been but instead measured by how many times we fall and choose to get back up.

✨ Reflection from our latest executive team retreat ✨

Watching this group move through a full day of exploration with the herd was nothing short of inspiring. As the day unfolded, their confidence began to bloom — quiet at first, then radiating outward as each leader stepped into their presence with authenticity and strength.

The horses, in their wisdom, offered the greatest gift: clear, immediate feedback that only comes when we show up grounded and confident. By the end of the workshop, each member of the team had not only found their own footing, but also discovered how much more powerful they are when they lead with trust, clarity, and confidence.

Leadership — it’s about presence. And this team left shining, ready to carry that lesson forward into every part of their work and life

“Trust is not built in big, sweeping moments. It’s built in tiny moments every day.” ~ Brene Brown

When we think about trust, we often think it should be this big, powerful moment of connection and peace, but trust often shows up quietly in the tiny moments of daily life. Building trust with horses is not something that happens overnight, it takes time and consistency. Horses care more about how we feel and act than what exercises we train or what we ask them for. They care about how we will respond in stressful situations, how we handle mistakes and how congruent our actions are with our insides. Building trust can take time, but it is so rewarding to feel our horses search for our guidance in challenging moments and find peace in our presence!
