I also believe that the mind-body connection is an essential component in showing up for ourselves and others. If we do not transform our pain, we will most assuredly transmit it... through our humor. Ahh!

Let me ease you into the present moment by letting you be aware in your body, your breathing, and releasing of your tensions.

Let me design for you a treatment plan that has your short and long term goals at the core of it.

Let me show you some home care exercises that can help you feel more fluid in your envelop.

Let me create a safe space for you to receive self care and to reconnect.

Do you want to offer a 20 mins chair massage to all of your employees at the Christmas Party?

☝🏻Abdominal Massage

Did you know that massage facilitates the flow of blood and therefore facilitates absorption of nutrients from the digestive system and distribution of nutrients around the body? 😌

Massage shifts the balance of the autonomic nervous system such that the enteric nervous system predominates, and innervation by the parasympathetic division enhances all activities of the digestive system. Abdominal massage reflexively stimulates peristalsis and therefore enhances elimination. Kneading of the abdomen also promotes production and utilization of digestive juices through activation of the parasympathetic system. Deep kneading of the colon, from the ileocecal valve to the ascending colon, transverse colon, and descending colon (clock-wise motion), provides mechanical assistance to remove f***l material in more efficient manner and thus can have a very positive effect on constipation.

EDEMA

Edema is a local or general accumulation of fluid in the interstitial tissue spaces. It may result from the inflammatory response following an injury, or be a result of a systemic disease such as heart failure or it may occur after an obstruction of the lymphatic vessels. It is, therefore, important to determine the cause of edema before developing a treatment plan.

In order to understand how to treat edema, it is necessary to understand the function and anatomy of the lymphatic system. In the blood circulatory capillaries, slightly more fluid is pumped through the arterial ends into the interstitial spaces than is absorbed at the venous ends. The excess clear, watery interstitial fluid is collected, filtered and returned to the circulation by the lymphatic system. The average volume of lymphatic fluid, called lymph, returned to the circulatory system, is 2,4 litres per day (Guyton, 1986). The lymph also contains white blood cells, plasma proteins, fats and debris such as cell fragments, bacteria and viruses. An equilibrium is maintained as long as the fluid entering the interstitial tissues via the arterioles equals the fluid leaving through the venules and the lymphatics; edema results if this equilibrium is upset.

The lymphatic vessels have a minor contractile capability and a pulse of one to 30 beats per minute (Wittlinger, Wittlinger, 1990; Immen, 1995). This minor contraction is stimulated by stretching the vessels, either internally, by the vessels filling, or externally, by light massage. However, the majority of lymphatic flow is stimulated by the movement of skeletal muscles, the diaphragm when breathing, peristalsis and contraction of arteries where they are in contact with lymphatic vessels.

When massage techniques are performed on the superficial lymphatic vessels, a average pressure of 30 mm Hg had been found to have the greatest effect on moving the lymph without compressing and temporarily collapsing the vessels (Wittlinger, Wittlinger, 1990; Casley-Smith, Casley-Smith, 1986). Who knew that touch with the pressure equivalent to the weight of a dime could have such powerful effects!

Effects of massage on blood⁉️

The effects of massage on blood are indirect through the manipulation of soft tissue throughout the body.

❗️Massage of connective tissues increases the fluidity (decreases the viscosity) of ground substance extracellular matrix.
❗️Massage can also increase the hemoglobin and red blood cell counts as well as the platelet count. The oxygen-carrying capacity of blood is thus increased for a limited time after general massage.
❗️The effects of massage on the entire cardiovascular system (blood, heart, blood vessels, and lymphatics) significantly enhance the overall nutrition of tissues throughout the body.

Welcome to Massage Your Humors, a word play that has another literal use pertaining to bodily fluids. Have you ever stubbled upon Hippocrates’ humoural theory?

Although some authors suggest that the concept of "humours" may have origins in Ancient Egyptian medicine, and later ancient Indian Ayurveda medicine that developed a theory doshas linked with the five elements earth, water, fire, air and ether, the theory was not systemized until ancient Greek thinkers.

Hippocrates suggested that humours are the vital bodily fluids: blood, yellow bile, phlegm and "black bile". In one of his treatises “On the Nature of Man”, he describes the theory as follows: Health is primarily that state in which these constituent substances are in the correct proportion to each other, both in strength and quantity, and are well mixed. Pain occurs when one of the substances presents either a deficiency or an excess, or is separated in the body and not mixed with others.

In “On the Temperaments”, Galen further emphasized the importance of the qualities. An ideal temperament involved a balanced mixture of the four qualities. Galen identified four temperaments in which one of the qualities- warm, cold, moist or dry- predominated and four more in which a combination of two, warm and moist, warm and dry, cold and dry or cold and moist, dominated. These last four, named for the humors with which they were associated—that is, sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic- eventually became better known than the others. While the term temperament came to refer just to psychological dispositions, Galen used it to refer to bodily dispositions, which determined a person's susceptibility to particular diseases as well as behavioral and emotional inclinations.

Greeks and Romans, and the later Muslim and Western European medical establishments that adopted and adapted classical medical philosophy, believed that each of these humors would wax and wane in the body, depending on diet and activity. When a patient was suffering from a surplus or imbalance of one of these four fluids, patient's personality and or physical health could be negatively affected.
