Low back pain after sitting is something I hear about all the time in clinic.
Patients will often say things like:
“I feel stuck when I first stand up.”
“It takes me a minute to fully straighten.”
“My back feels sore after sitting for too long.”
This can happen for different reasons, but one common pattern is that the low back doesn’t love being flexed/slouched for long periods — especially when symptoms feel worse after sitting and better once you get moving.
These 3 simple changes can help take some pressure off and make that transition from sitting to standing feel smoother:
1. Use a lumbar roll or support
2. Hip hinge when you stand
3. Try gentle standing lumbar extension
This isn’t meant to replace an assessment, but it’s a good place to start if this is a familiar pattern for you.
If it keeps coming back, pain travels down your leg, or you notice numbness, tingling, or weakness, it’s worth getting checked.
Save this for the next time your low back feels stuck after sitting.
