Hi, I’m Jamie Voskamp, owner of Equitouch.

I am a Registered Practical Nurse, work at a local café, and am a proud mom of three busy kids. Life keeps me busy, but my passion for horses is what led me to start Equitouch.

My journey began when I became fascinated by the biomechanics of horses and the causes of lameness issues. I found myself constantly wanting to learn more about how the equine body works and functions. That curiosity quickly grew into a passion, and I decided to take an equine massage course so I could help horses feel and perform at their very best.

I truly believe that every horse has something to teach us—we just have to be willing to listen.

My nursing background has given me a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, which has been incredibly valuable in my work with horses. Understanding how the body moves and functions has come naturally to me, and I love applying that knowledge to help support equine health and wellness.

I absolutely love what I do and am so grateful to everyone who has trusted me with their horses. It is a privilege to be part of their care and well-being.

If you’d ever like to discuss your horse, their movement, comfort, or overall wellness, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be happy to chat and see if Equitouch would be a great fit for you and your horse.

Ps I love this little spicy pony!

Movement is a full-body collaboration.

✔️ The back muscles stay relaxed and supple to allow extension and freedom of movement.

✔️ The cutaneous colli assists by contracting, supporting movement of the sternum and rib cage.

✔️ The abdominal muscles engage to create a downward pelvic tilt, helping establish balance and alignment.

✔️ The quadriceps activate to drive the body forward with power and control.

Every step, stride, and movement pattern depends on muscles working together in harmony. Understanding these connections helps us move more efficiently, perform better, and support long-term health.

LONG + LOW
It’s not just the horse putting its head down.

True long and low is a whole-body posture built through softness, lift, and coordination.

For a horse to truly stretch long and low:

✨ The topline must soften and lengthen
✨ The neck must release tension and telescope forward
✨ The hyoid apparatus must stay free of restriction
✨ The undercarriage must stretch and support lift through the thoracic sling
✨ The ribcage must stay mobile and breathing
✨ The pelvis and lumbar area must remain free enough for the hind legs to step under
✨ The horse must push from behind without collapsing onto the forehand

When it’s correct, the entire spine lengthens.
The back swings.
The base of the neck lifts.
The stride becomes elastic, connected, and soft.

False “long and low” often looks like:
— dropped chest
— broken neck at C3/C4
— trailing hind legs
— tension in the jaw
— hollowing behind the saddle

A horse lowering its head is not automatically stretching correctly.

True long and low feels like the horse carries you forward through the back while reaching softly into the contact.

Across all riding disciplines, horses are asked to use their bodies in similar foundational ways:

1. Long and low
2. Collection
3. Lateral flexion

For a horse to move correctly, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments need to remain as free from unnecessary tension as possible. When the body is relaxed and supple, the horse can stretch properly, engage the hind end, and develop true collection, balance, and softness through lateral flexion.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a deeper look into each of these concepts, how they connect, and why they matter for every horse — regardless of discipline.
