Frenectomy 101 β a gentle guide for new moms.
Because nobody should have to google this alone at 2am.
If someone has mentioned a tongue tie or lip tie β or you've been struggling and don't know why β this one's for you. No jargon. No overwhelm. Just the basics, explained the way a friend would.
So⦠what is a frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a simple, gentle procedure that releases a small band of tissue β called the frenulum β that can restrict movement of the tongue or lip.
When that tissue is too short or tight, it's called a tongue tie (ankyloglossia) or lip tie. And it can make things that should feel natural feel really, really hard.
What does a tongue or lip tie actually affect?
Difficulty latching or staying latched
Clicking sounds or slipping off during feeds
A baby who seems frustrated, gassy, or unsettled after feeding
Discomfort for mom during feeding
Slow weight gain or feeding fatigue in baby
What does the procedure actually involve?
It's much less scary than it sounds. A frenectomy is typically a quick, precise laser procedure. There's minimal discomfort, very little recovery time, and most babies settle quickly after.
At Luna, we don't jump straight to the procedure. Assessment always comes first. We want to understand the full picture β and make sure a frenectomy is truly the right step for your baby before anything else.
You've probably already spent time searching, wondering, second-guessing. That stops here. Luna's team is warm, thorough, and completely judgement-free β and we'll walk with you every step of the way.
