A great day on the land learning about Rat Root. We learned how to identify, to honorably harvest the root, how to clean and use it. Traditional medicinal uses include treating coughs, colds, sore throats, toothaches, stomach issues and inflammation.

Join us for a Traditional Tea Dance gathering held in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Schedule:
🪶 2:00 p.m. — Pipe Ceremony
📖 3:30 p.m. — Tea Dance Information Session
🍲 5:00 p.m. — Feast
🥁 Tea Dance following the feast

The information session will share the Tea Dance’s history, teachings and cultural significance from both Dene Tha’ and Cree perspectives. Participants will also learn how to dance and take part respectfully.

Throughout the evening, the Dene Tha’ Drummers from Meander River and the Fox Lake Drummers will alternate and share their songs.

Everyone is welcome to attend, learn and participate. No previous dancing experience is needed.

Hosted by Native Counselling Services of Alberta, the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre and the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Circle of Services.

Join us Tuesday, September 22nd at 1 PM to celebrate the start of a new season as well as help put our GPFC Traditional Healing Garden to bed. We are honored to have Elder Margerie led us in this cultural ceremony.

** Please note that females wishing to participate should wear a skirt or have a blanket to cover their legs and if on your moon time you can still observe outside the circle. **

Additionally we went on a Medicine Plant Photo Scavenger Hunt at Kleskun Hills with Northwestern Polytechnic and the Outland Youth Employment Program. Sharing the information of the different plants in our area with the younger generations is important for cultural continuity, life skills and medical knowledge.
Kleskun Hills is a protected provincial park and we practice only harvesting what you will use so we only have them take photos as a team. The winning team were the first to correctly identify all 9 plants and they got bonus points for sharing other ones not on the sheet.
