Not every difficult September needs professional support.

Transitions are hard. Kids have bad days. Families get tired. Sometimes things settle with time, routine, connection and support.

But if you're noticing that your child's distress is persistent, getting worse, or interfering with everyday life, it's worth taking seriously.

And you don't need to wait until you can point to one big problem.

Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation with someone who can help you make sense of what you're seeing.

If you're wondering whether therapy might be helpful for your child or teen, you're welcome to reach out.

Friendships are hard.

Kids are learning how to navigate belonging, conflict, boundaries, rejection, repair, and all the complicated feelings that come with other people.

Our instinct as parents is often to make the hurt go away.

Sometimes that's exactly what's needed.

And sometimes our most helpful role is to sit beside them, listen, and help them figure out what they want to do next.

A useful question: “Do you want me to help fix this, help you figure it out, or just listen?”

Sometimes the problem isn't that your child doesn't want to talk.

It's that “How was school?” is a really big question.

Try smaller, more specific questions — or talk while you're doing something together.

And don't underestimate the power of simply being around each other.

A child telling you a random story about Minecraft while you're driving home may be just as valuable as a serious conversation about their day.

If your child saves their biggest feelings for you, it can be incredibly frustrating.

But sometimes the child who “holds it together” all day finally lets go when they get home because home is where they feel safe enough to fall apart.

That doesn't mean every behaviour is okay or that limits disappear.

It does mean that sometimes the most helpful response isn't another demand.

Try: snack → quiet → connection → then expectations

And give everyone a little time to come back online. ❤️

A little back-to-school nervousness is completely understandable.

For some kids, though, worries can start taking over, showing up as tummy aches, trouble sleeping, frequent reassurance-seeking, tears, avoidance, or reluctance to go to school.

One of the most helpful things we can do is resist the urge to immediately make the worry disappear.

Instead, we can help children name it, understand it, and build confidence that they can cope with what comes next.

You don't have to convince your child that nothing bad will happen.

You can help them know:
“Whatever happens, we'll figure it out.”

Sometimes what looks like defiance is actually difficulty with shifting gears.

This can be especially noticeable when kids are tired, hungry, overwhelmed, or being asked to stop something they enjoy.

That doesn't mean there shouldn't be boundaries. It just means we can hold the boundary without making the child feel like the problem.

Try:
“I know you don't want to stop. It's still time to go. Do you want to put your shoes on first, or your jacket?”

Same limit. Different experience.

The return to school can be exciting, stressful, or a bit of both, for kids and their parents.

Sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have everything sorted before the first day: sleep schedules, routines, lunches, school supplies, extracurriculars…

But your child doesn't need to walk through the school doors perfectly prepared and perfectly regulated.

They'll be adjusting. So are you.

A gradual return to routines, realistic expectations, and a little extra patience can go a long way.

And if the first week is messy? That's okay too. 💛
