We know how to treat OCD. The challenge is getting effective treatment to the people who need it.
The International OCD Foundation’s recent America’s OCD Care Crisis white paper highlighted a significant gap between what we know about treating OCD — and what people with OCD are actually receiving.
In an analysis of more than 10 million U.S. patient records:
• Up to 75% of OCD cases may have gone undetected or undiagnosed.
• More than 72% of identified patients were not referred for evidence-based ERP or CBT.
• Only 2% had documented evidence of receiving Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — the psychological treatment specifically recommended for OCD.
Those numbers highlight why improving access to OCD treatment isn’t only about creating more services.
We also need more clinicians who know how to recognize OCD and confidently provide evidence-based treatment.
That’s one of the reasons clinician education is an important part of our work at Lotus.
OCD & ERP: The Manual was developed to give clinicians practical, foundational training in recognizing and assessing OCD, developing an OCD-specific case formulation, and delivering Exposure and Response Prevention using contemporary approaches to exposure learning.
For clinicians already treating OCD, OCD & ERP: Beyond the Manual builds on those foundations through advanced clinical application — including complex presentations, Rumination-Focused ERP, treatment resistance, family involvement and integrating treatment when the textbook version of ERP isn’t enough.
Because every clinician who becomes better equipped to recognize and treat OCD has the potential to improve access to appropriate care for many more people.
We have effective treatments for OCD.
The next challenge is making sure people can actually access clinicians who know how to deliver them.
