Your airway is much more than just the passage you breathe through—it influences your sleep, energy, concentration, growth and development, and overall health.
As a Registered Dental Hygienist, I pay attention to signs that may suggest a compromised airway, including:
• Mouth breathing
• Snoring
• Frequent waking or restless sleep
• Dry mouth• Chronic bad breath
• Teeth grinding or clenching
• Crowded teeth or a narrow palate
• Enlarged tonsils
• Forward head posture
• Fatigue despite a full night’s sleep
These signs don’t automatically mean there is an airway disorder, but they can indicate that further assessment by the appropriate healthcare provider may be beneficial.
Many people are surprised to learn that how we breathe affects more than our lungs. Healthy nasal breathing helps:
✔ Filter, warm, and humidify the air we breathe
✔ Support healthy jaw and facial development in children
✔ Promote proper tongue posture and oral function
✔ Reduce dry mouth and the risk of cavities and gum disease
✔ Support restorative sleep and oxygen delivery
✔ Improve overall oral and whole-body wellness
Airway health is a team approach. As an RDH, I can screen for potential concerns, educate patients, and collaborate with dentists, physicians, ENT specialists, orthodontists, sleep physicians, speech-language pathologists, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals when appropriate.
Because sometimes the symptoms that you think are “normal”—like snoring, mouth breathing, or waking up tired—deserve a closer look.
Healthy breathing isn’t just about getting enough air. It’s about improving quality of life, one breath at a time.
🦷 Breathe better. Sleep better. Smile healthier.
