Can I cancel a funeral contract I've already signed?

Yes — in most cases. Here's how it works in Ontario:

📋 You can cancel a funeral contract in writing at any time before services are provided.
📋 The provider has 30 days to refund payment for goods/services not yet received.
📋 For interment rights: full refund within 30 days. After 30 days, rules depend on whether resale is allowed.
📋 For pre-paid trust contracts: full refund within 30 days. After 30 days, the provider may keep 10% (max $350).

Always get cancellation and refund terms in writing before you sign an agreement.

What is a 'minimum services charge' at a funeral home?

The minimum services charge is the baseline fee for all death care. It's non-declinable. It typically includes:

📋 Transfer of remains from place of death
📋 Staff and professional services
📋 Documentation and death registration
📋 Facilities for preparation and shelter
📋 Initial and final transfer of remains

What it does NOT include:

❌ Casket, urn, flowers
❌ Embalming

What to know about cemetery by-laws before you buy a plot

Before purchasing cemetery rights, read the by-laws. Here's what to look for:

📋 What caskets are permitted? (Most accept all standard caskets)
📋 Are green burials or shroud burials accommodated?
📋 Is a vault or outer liner required?
📋 Can cremated remains be scattered on site?
📋 Can pets be buried with humans?
📋 Can interment rights be resold?
📋 What are the rules for grave markers and monuments?
