BACK TO SCHOOL = BACK TO BEDTIMES! š¤š
One of the most common questions I get this time of year is āWhat time should my child actually be going to bed?ā
And unfortunately, there isnāt ONE perfect bedtime for every child of the same age.
Two 8-year-olds who both need to be up at 7:00am may not need the exact same bedtime. One may be happy, regulated and well-rested with a little less sleep, while another may need considerably more to be at their best.
Thatās why I have THREE bedtime charts š
š°Average sleep needs
ā¬ļøHigher sleep needs
ā¬ļøLower sleep needs
Find your childās age, find the time they need to wake for school, and use the chart that best reflects their individual sleep needs to find a target asleep time.
āNot sure which chart your child falls into? Start with AVERAGE and then watch your kiddo. If theyāre consistently difficult to wake, exhausted after school, falling asleep in the car, extra emotional or sleeping significantly longer whenever given the opportunity, try moving toward the higher-sleep-needs chart. If theyāre waking happily on their own, functioning well throughout the day and consistently unable to fall asleep at the suggested time despite a solid routine, they may fall closer to the lower-sleep-needs chart.
šAnd remember: the time on the chart is the goal for when theyāre ASLEEP, not when you start brushing teeth! Plan to begin the bedtime routine early enough to allow time to wind down.
These charts are a starting point, not a prescription. Sleep needs vary from child to child, and bedtime should always be adjusted based on how your child is actually doing.
š SAVE this one for those school mornings when youāre wondering whether bedtime needs a tweak! And happy back-to-school everyone! š„±
