Knitters, we know how easy it is for “just a few more rows” to turn into another hour. 🧶

You don’t have to wait for your neck, shoulders or back to start complaining before you change position or move a little.

Sometimes you’ve simply been knitting in the same position for long enough.

What’s your signal to move?

Tree Pose doesn’t have to begin with your foot high on your leg.

I like starting with what I call a sapling—a smaller, steadier version that lets you explore balance and build confidence before moving on.

Balance isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s a skill that grows with practice.

Start where you are. Let your balance grow from there.

Gentle Movement for Seasoned Bodies

Summer doesn’t always come with a chair. Sometimes the best seat is a rock, a low step or the edge of a dock.

For me, maintaining functional movement means having choices and being able to participate in life the way I want to.

If maintaining your functional movement matters to you too, consider joining me for a Gentle Movement or Somatics class, or work with me one-to-one.

We’re pretty good at finding workarounds when a movement starts getting harder. But sometimes that workaround means we stop asking our body to make the movement at all.

Reaching behind to fasten a bra is just one example. What other movements have you gradually stopped doing?

Maintaining functional movement is a big part of the work I do with seasoned bodies through Somatics, gentle yoga and 1:1 sessions.

We often think about stretching our feet, but sometimes they simply need to move.

This simple “foot wave” explores dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, and toe movement to support foot mobility. It’s also a nice little brain gym.

Give it three rounds.

Sometimes it’s the ordinary moments that remind us why movement matters.

Playing with the dogs. Walking across the yard. Turning. Reaching. Laughing.

When movement becomes easier, everyday life opens up again.

What ordinary moment are you grateful your body still lets you enjoy?

Walking is a cross-body pattern.

When your right leg steps forward, your left arm naturally swings forward too. It’s one of the ways our bodies are designed to move.

This little movement is simply an invitation to explore that pattern. Slow it down. Notice how the two sides of your body work together.

Sometimes it’s nice to play with movement… just because.

Have fun practising the pattern.
