A peek into our family memory jar.

We noticed overall a sense of doom, gloom, and mostly noticing the negative in ourselves and the kids lately and are trying something new.

As an ADHD household, we didn't set any goals around when or how often to add to the jar. Instead, I simply told the kids I'm curious how full we can make it between now and New Year's eve and plunked it on a central space in our livingroom.

I'm planning a family NYE celebration where we get to look back on the notes left and memories made through the year. Hopefully to act like a boost mid-winter when we need it most and to help with the dreaded emotions that show up around transitions. I also hope it will help rewire our brains to more easily notice the good parts of life.

Has anyone done done something similar and have tips or suggestions to add to it?

It's been a week since the retreat. I'm still processing and beyond thankful to have been welcomed into this space by so many wonderful, loving moms.

Melissa, Tiff and Sarah: Thank you for trusting me to support these moms and sharing in your friendship. Each of your children are so lucky to have you as their mom and it is clear how deeply your children are loved. What a gift you offer in allowing that love to be felt by so many families.

To the participants: Each of you are so brave to have stepped into a space that requires vulnerability. Thank you for sharing your babies, yourselves and letting me be part of the laughter. What I witness in each of you I bring into the sessions I have with my Firefly clients who are often overwhelmed by fear. It is such a gift to know in my heart that they too will laugh again.

I ended the weekend with some special moments. While driving away, I locked eyes with a deer in a clearing. It helped me to remember to slow down and be open. Minutes later, I saw some 'odd branches' in the bush. I stopped the car and out came a moose! Without the deer, I never would have seen the moose.

Then, while reminding myself that I am alive and here via some rollercoaster therapy and the importance of embracing the only thing we are guaranteed -the present moment- a song was playing that often shows up when I need to hear it most.

"You ain't seen nothing yet..." but I hope you all keep your eyes and hearts open.

"Dad, wake up! There is water running down the stairs."

In our house, April fools is a big day. I used to think I was showing up as a "good mom" being playful and silly with my kids.

I now know, today is for me just as much as it's for them.

I get to let my inner kid out.

I get to celebrate that our relationships can feel safe despite surprises.

I get to guide my kids in executive functioning, something we are always working on as an ADHD household. Planning, remembering each step and not giving into the impulse to do that super awesome prank we also know might be unsafe.

I get to make memories with my family that are full of laughter.

You dont have to continue feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable every time you think of giving birth.
