Gender-affirming voice care should not come with a rulebook for how someone is “supposed” to sound.

At Buttle SLP, we approach voice care as exploration, not correction. The goal is not to push someone toward a more “acceptable” voice. It’s exploring what feels good, sustainable, what gives you more choice, and what actually fits your life.

It also means we might be challenging a few “rules” along the way.

If gender-affirming voice care is something you’ve been curious about, reach out - we’d love to connect.

I can have a strategy that works really well for a while, and then life gets heavier and suddenly… nope. Not working the same way anymore.

A move, illness, grief, work stress, family stuff, too many things happening at once — all of that can change how much capacity we have for planning, starting, organizing, remembering, following through.

It’s frustrating and sometimes shame sets in with the “Why can’t I do this? This used to work….”
The “I should be handling this better.”

But sometimes it isn’t that the strategy failed - it’s that the situation changed, and demands exceed the capacity you have.

The work becomes recalibrating a bit: changing the tool, asking for more support, reducing some demands, making the first step smaller, or just accepting that this version of life needs something different.

I’ve had a pretty heavy month myself, and I’ve definitely had to revamp some of the strategies I normally lean on…. It’s got me thinking of how to share more.

Be kind to your brain, friends! 🩵

BRAIN BANDZ: WORLD TOUR 2026 🎸🧠🤘
One night only. Zero musical talent, but we make up for it with competitive energy...

The Brain Bandz reunited for another year of Brain It On!: Cognitive Corporate Challenge and finished 2nd overall (and runners-up for team spirit!). Not bad for a band that is here for the fun and professional photos (stay tuned for those) 😂🤘

Even better, the night raised over $20,000 for the Acquired Brain Injury Innovation Fund at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation.

Huge shoutout to our bandmates from, Lawlor Therapy, Wright Rehab Recovery Plus Rehabilitation, KW rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Management Inc!

And big thank you to Siskinds The law firm for planning such an amazing event for a great cause!

We will step up our laser tag game for a comeback tour 🤘

Sometimes the word is there, but getting to it takes a little longer.

You might pause, describe what you mean, gesture, substitute another word, or decide to keep going. Those are all ways of communicating.

Word-finding changes can happen for many reasons. When they’re getting in the way of conversations, work, appointments, relationships, or other parts of everyday life, an SLP can help you understand what’s happening and explore strategies that fit how you communicate.

The goal isn’t getting every word “right” every time. It’s having more ways to get your message across.

Goals don’t have to sound clinical to be meaningful.

Sometimes the thing someone really wants is to speak up in a meeting. Order their own coffee. Read to their kids. Feel more comfortable chatting with someone new. Feel more like themselves when they communicate.

Those goals might sound small on paper, but in real life, they can matter a lot.

Most of the time, we write goals in the first person and build them around our client’s own ideas. That matters to us. You’re not being handed a list of goals we decided for you.

You tell us what matters. We bring our clinical training and experience. Then we build the plan together in a way that actually fits your life.

Because real life counts.

A lot of what makes communication work happens before the words come out.

Attention, memory, organization, reading, writing, understanding information, and finding the words to express yourself can all affect how communication feels in everyday life.

You might notice it in a meeting, while following a conversation, writing an email, keeping track of an appointment, or trying to organize what you want to say.

At Buttle SLP, we look at what’s getting in the way of the things that matter to you, then work together on practical strategies that fit your life.

Let’s find your voice (again).

“How many SLP sessions will I need?” is a question we hear a lot.
The answer is different for everyone.

Some people come to SLP with a specific goal that can be supported over a shorter block of sessions. Others benefit from support over a longer period of time, especially when their communication needs, routines, work, relationships, or priorities are changing.

At Buttle SLP, we don't decide on a set number of sessions and expect you to fit into that plan. Therapy planning is collaborative. That means we’ll talk about what’s working, what feels manageable between sessions, and whether the support you’re receiving continues to fit your goals.

Whenever possible, we also want you to leave your first session with something practical — a strategy, technique, or tool you can begin using in your day-to-day life.

There isn’t one “right” number of sessions. but the plan should work for you.

We’re pretty excited to share this one. 💙

Our founder, Meagan (she/her), has been nominated for Health Care Provider of the Year in the 2026 Awards of Excellence in Brain Injury Rehabilitation, presented by Ontario Brain Injury Association and PIA law (McLeish Orlando Lawyers LLP , Thomson Rogers LLP and Oatley Vigmond LLP )

Brain injury work has been close to Meagan’s heart since long before Buttle SLP existed, and the people she’s met along the way - clients, families, colleagues, community partners, and fellow advocates - continue to shape how we show up and do this work.

If you’d like to read a little more about why Meagan is so passionate about the brain injury community, you can find her nominee profile here: https://aoe.pialaw.ca/archives/nominees/meagan-buttle

And if you’ve worked with Meagan, collaborated on care, learned alongside her or crossed paths with her work in some way, you can support her nomination by leaving a comment on her nominee page and casting a vote through this link: https://aoe.pialaw.ca/vote

Mostly, we’re just really grateful to be part of this community. 💙🧠
