Self-compassion is not about letting yourself off the hook. It is about learning to respond to yourself with the same patience, understanding, and kindness you would naturally offer to someone you care about.
Think about how you speak to a friend who made a mistake. You probably wouldnât tell them theyâre incapable, behind, or not good enough. You would remind them that mistakes happen, that theyâre doing their best, and that one difficult moment doesnât define them.
Yet when it comes to ourselves, that same compassion can suddenly disappear.
Self-compassion invites us to notice that differenceânot to silence our inner critic, but to develop another voice alongside it.
A voice that can say:
âThis is difficult. Iâm struggling right now. What would I say to someone I love if they were in my place?â
Sometimes, the way forward begins not with pushing ourselves harder, but with learning to stand beside ourselves when things are hard.
