It’s not laziness; it’s literal physics.

For neurodivergent brains, the "activation energy" required to start a task (even something "simple" like washing a dish or opening an email) can feel like trying to push a boulder uphill.

Because of executive dysfunction, the brain struggle to bridge the gap between intention and action.

But inertia works both ways. Once a neurodivergent brain finally overcomes that initial friction and gets moving, it often enters hyperfocus, and then stopping the task becomes just as difficult as starting it was.

If you are stuck in a state of rest today, give yourself some grace. Your brain isn't broken; it's just dealing with a lot of internal friction.

Introducing Wired Differently: An Emotion Regulation Workbook for ADHD, Autistic & AuDHD Adults

If you're neurodivergent, you already know: emotion regulation doesn't work the way it's usually taught. It's not "just breathe" or "count to ten." For ADHD, Autistic, and AuDHD brains, regulation has to start somewhere different.

That's what this workbook is built around. It starts with psychoeducation on why emotion regulation is uniquely difficult for ADHD, Autistic and AuDHD brains, then helps you build real awareness of your own body cues, sensations, and emotions. From there, it walks you through a layered approach to regulation, starting with sensory and nervous system regulation, then moving into emotional, thought, and behavioural regulation, before guiding you to build your own personalized toolkit. It closes with a focus on self-compassion, because this work is hard and you deserve to be gentle with yourself through it.

Digital PDF download, print it out or use it interactively on a tablet with an app like GoodNotes or Notability.

By Devyn Eadie, RP, Willow Creek Clinic Director, published under NeuroCompass.

A note: this workbook is a self-guided educational resource and isn't a substitute for therapy. It's entirely optional. Whether or not you pick up a copy has no bearing on your care at Willow Creek Counselling & Psychotherapy.

We often mistake "being grounded" for feeling completely peaceful, zen, or untouched by stress.

But let’s be real: sometimes life brings a category 5 storm. Expecting yourself to feel calm in the middle of it isn’t realistic, and honestly, it puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on your coping skills.

Grounding isn't about stopping the storm or pretending it isn't raining. It’s about finding an anchor. It’s knowing that you can feel angry, overwhelmed, or deeply sad, while still remaining safe, steady, and connected to the present moment.

You don't have to navigate the storm perfectly. You just have to stay anchored. ⚓️

Happy International Self-Care Day!

If you look closely at the image on your feed today, you won't see a flawless, aesthetically perfect routine. You see someone resting under a heavy blanket, a warm cup of tea, and a stack of books that haven't been read yet.

That is because real self-care is often about subtraction, not addition.

When we treat this day like a project, it becomes just another thing we have to do perfectly. We try to force ourselves into rigid morning routines, complicated skincare steps, or mindfulness practices that actually make our brains feel louder, not quieter.

If your self-care routine feels like a chore, it is no longer serving your well-being.

True self-care is about reducing the friction in your life. It is giving yourself a literal permission slip to lower the bar when your battery is low. Today, that might look like leaving the laundry in the basket, ordering the takeout, or letting an email wait until tomorrow so you can sit in a quiet, low-stimulation room right now.

You do not need to optimize your rest to celebrate today. You just need to experience it.

How can you subtract one expectation from your plate for International Self-Care Day?

If you are recovering from people-pleasing, saying "no" can feel incredibly uncomfortable. You might feel guilty, anxious, or like you’re letting someone down.

But remember: clear is kind. You don’t need a complex excuse or a dramatic reason to protect your time and energy. A simple, polite, and direct boundary is enough.

We talk a lot about 'neurodiversity' and 'masking,' but what does the actual process of unmasking look like on a random Tuesday?

It looks like saying 'no' to exhausting social plans, letting yourself stim, and rewriting the rules of how you navigate the world. I broke down my own journey and what unmasking looks like in practice in my new blog post.

Check it out and let me know if any of this resonates with you:

Masking in autism means hiding who you really are to fit in, and it comes at a serious cost. Learn what it is, why it happens, and how to begin unmasking safely.
