Northern Pelvic Connection Providing Pelvic Health & Orthopedic Physiotherapy for Northern Ontario (Virtual) and on Manitoulin Island (Clinic) Hi/Aanii everyone! Book now for September!

My name is Kelly Fleming and I'm a Registered Physiotherapist in Northern Ontario. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2017 and right away found my passion in Pelvic Health. For the past 6 years, I have worked as a Pelvic & Orthopaedic PT in private practice. For the past 2.5 years, I have had the privilege of working with First Nations individuals in their home communities on Manitoulin

Island. I'm so excited to start my own private practice and provide this specialized service to remote/often under-serviced areas of Northern Ontario. Starting September 2023, I will be providing telehealth services Ontario-wide and in-home services for Espanola, Sudbury, Elliot Lake and Blind River. I care about making this experience as comfortable for you as possible. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

⭐️ PHYSIOTHERAPY IN ELLIOT LAKE ⭐️

I’m so excited to announce that I will be practicing out of Northern Thyme Naturopathic Clinic every Thursday starting in December and am accepting patients for all types of physiotherapy (regular and pelvic health).

For those who don’t know my background, I have practiced as an orthopaedic and pelvic health physiotherapist for almost 8 years now and can treat pain anywhere in the body. I’m a huge believer in education, exercise, optimal lifestyle habits and activity modification to see positive changes. I also offer manual therapy (massage, joint mobilizations), modalities (ultrasound, electrical stimulation), taping and acupuncture.

As a pelvic health physiotherapist, I’m certified to perform internal vaginal and re**al exams to treat pelvic health dysfunction.

Physiotherapy is included in most private health insurance plans. I do not offer OHIP coverage or direct billing at this time.

Offering booking online, by telephone or email.

⭐️ WATER & BLADDER CONTROL ⭐️

Do you ever avoid water before a long car ride? Or before a long meeting? Or in general to avoid frequent bathroom trips?

Your bladder loves to be hydrated 💦 and when it isn’t getting enough water, the contents within the bladder become more concentrated. This can lead to the bladder lining irritation and can contribute to urgency and frequency.

Drinking water first thing in the morning and small sips of water throughout the day is the way to go!

Pelvic physio can help with these symptoms via urotherapy (a.k.a behavioural interventions). Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need more help! ❤️

⭐️ Leaking on the way to the bathroom? ⭐️

Tip #1 - DON’T RUSH

Seems counterintuitive right?! Rushing can increase tension in the pelvic floor, preventing it from doing its job (keeping the valve closed)!

Tip #2 - BREATH

Performing a proper diaphragmatic breath is a “reverse kegel” and can help relax the pelvic floor, allowing it to do its job (… keeping the valve closed)!

Tip #3 - DISTRACT

Pinch your thigh, count backwards from 100 by 2.5 (or whatever number you wish 😂), think of your favourite summer memory. Instead of fear of leaking (creating tension in the pelvic floor), choose a different thought instead!

For more tips on urge delay techniques, comment “DELAY” below or DM directly!

Remember - leaking (p*e or poo) is common, but not normal and you do not have to suffer in silence!

Ya know, I am going to go there! 😄💁‍♀️💩

Sometimes when we are out and about, nature calls! And it is so important to listen to your stool call to avoid constipation!

No squatty potty? No problem! Crossing one leg over the other helps to elevate one knee above the level of the same hip, which helps part of the pelvic floor relax… and relaxation is key for dropping the kids off at the pool! (Hopefully it’s more like a long and smooth snake, as we are aiming for type 4 on the bristol stool chart 😉).

I think this is dainty as 💩 gets!

Feel free to DM if you have any questions!

Virtual pelvic physiotherapy - yes, it’s a thing! 🙏

It’s a great option for those who live in remote areas, who may not have access to childcare, who may have transportation difficulties, who can’t take time away from work or do not like leaving the house!

What is involved in an assessment?

⭐️ It all starts with a conversation about your symptoms and what you’re going through ❤️ - no you won’t be cut off after 3 concerns or any time limit!

⭐️ Be ready to move! We may look at your breathing, back and hip mobility, strength and/or balance.

⭐️ Guided self-palpation (if you feel comfortable to do so) involving areas of tenderness and the core.

⭐️ Questionnaires that get an idea of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs about your symptoms.

What treatment is provided?

⭐️ Education

⭐️ Exercise

⭐️ Strategies to unwind the nervous system

⭐️ Self-manual therapy techniques

⭐️ Devices for muscular release

⭐️ Collaboration with other healthcare professionals

Thank you technology for improving access to care! Additionally, research supports that active vs. passive treatment leads to better outcomes (a.k.a self-efficacy). Don’t wait to start your pelvic health journey today - you got this! 👊🏼

Aches and pains during pregnancy? Lightening crotch? Low back and hip pain? You’re not alone. And no your pelvis isn’t falling apart! Your hormones are changing, which increases flexibility and sensitivity of your tissues. Even with this, your pelvis remains robust throughout pregnancy.

3 things that can help with pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain or PPGP:

1.) Exercise! Pain-free, novel movement to help keep the tissues mobile and strong, and the nervous system desensitized.

2.) Compression/support garment - these can help with pain and apprehension of movement, not only during pregnancy but also postpartum! Common companies that I recommend are .

3.) Managing stress, emotional well-being and sleep (I know, sometimes easier said than done, especially with all the things to do before baby arrives).

If you’re not sure where to start or would like to know more info, pelvic physios are here to help! ❤️
