One reason meltdowns feel so overwhelming is because parents often feel like they’re supposed to do everything at once.

👉🏼 Teach.
👉🏼 Comfort.
👉🏼 Reason.
👉🏼 Discipline.
👉🏼 Problem solve.
👉🏼 Calm everyone down.

But different stages of a meltdown require different responses.

When parents understand their role in each phase, they often feel more confident, calmer, and more effective.

In the next video, I’ll talk about one of the biggest mistakes parents make at the beginning of a meltdown.

Most parents focus on the meltdown itself.

And that makes sense.

The meltdown is loud.
It’s stressful.
It’s the part everyone wants to stop.

But meltdowns don’t begin at Peak.

They move through a predictable cycle: Pre-Meltdown → Early Meltdown → Mid-Meltdown → Post-Meltdown. And back to the pre-meltdown phase.

Or another way to think about this is: Baseline → Escalation → Peak → Recovery. And back to baseline.

Each phase gives us a different opportunity to support our child, build skills, and strengthen resilience.

If we focus only on stopping the meltdown in the moment, we miss many of the learning opportunities that help reduce meltdowns over time.

Think about this like only ever pouring water on the fire, but not actually dealing with the issue starting it in the first place.

You can keep putting it out successfully (maybe), but if you never deal with the electrical issue starting it in the first place, the fires will just keep coming.

You have to deal with the fire, of course, but when it’s put out, you also have to pay attention to and fix the root cause.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is progress:

✔️ Less frequent meltdowns
✔️ Less intense meltdowns
✔️ Faster recovery
✔️ Stronger coping skills
✔️ Greater resilience

And eventually, as you focus on building skills and coping strategies you enhance your child’s resilience (their capacity to handle hard things with ease), and you can get to a place where - most of the time - you skip the peak of the meltdown or even the escalation altogether!

And that’s the real goal, right?!

Real, lasting change happens when we support the entire cycle - not just the hardest part.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I teach parents is this:

A meltdown is not one event.
It has stages.

And each stage requires something different from us as parents.

Many of the strategies parents are taught fail because they’re being used at the wrong time.

When you learn to recognize the phase of the meltdown, your responses become more effective, calmer, and more intentional.

Follow along for Part 2, where I’ll break down the four different roles parents play throughout a meltdown.

If your child’s meltdowns feel sudden, this is the pattern you need to understand.

Sometimes it looks like your child went from 0 to 100 over nothing.

The pants.
The socks.
The transition.
The word “no.”
The tiny change in plans.

But underneath the behaviour, there’s usually something much deeper going on - it’s what I’ve coined The Downward Spiral of Doom - and it happens fast.

A situation triggers thoughts.
Those thoughts influence feelings.
Those feelings show up in the body.
The body drives behaviour.
And the behaviour creates an outcome that can either calm the spiral - or strengthen it.

This is why meltdowns and defiance aren’t just “bad behaviour” or “red choices.”

They’re thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and actions all moving in the same negative direction.

When we understand the spiral, we can respond with more clarity and less panic.

Save this as a reminder: it’s not just about the situation. It’s about the internal spiral underneath it.

The goal isn’t just helping your child get through hard things.

It’s helping them recognize that they did.

Confidence grows when children connect effort with progress.

One hard thing.
One calm reflection.
One next step at a time. 💪🏼

Some boundaries should stay firm every time.

Not to be harsh.
Not to be controlling.
But because clear, predictable limits help children feel safe and learn responsibility.

Big feelings are allowed.
Unsafe behaviour is not.

And yes - setting the boundary is one thing.

Knowing how to calmly follow through when your child argues, refuses, melts down, or pushes back is another.

That’s exactly why I created Transforming Defiance - to give parents a clear system for understanding behaviour, holding limits, and following through without constantly yelling, threatening, or giving in.

Save this post as a reminder.
And when you’re ready for the full system, you can find the program through the link in my bio.

When your child is struggling, your job isn’t to remove the feeling.

It’s to help them learn they can handle it.

Validate. Support. Hold the limit. Stay the course.

That’s how resilience is built. 💪🏼

Calm doesn’t mean permissive.
You can stay regulated and still hold the line.

Calm can still sound like:

👉🏼 “I won’t let you hit.”
👉🏼 “The answer is no.”
👉🏼 “You can be upset. The boundary stays.”

That’s not being soft.
That’s leadership.

Save this for the next time you need to stay calm and firm. ♥️💪🏼
