Meet & Learn with Chief Del Riley: Mi’kmaq Treaty Rights
We are honoured to welcome Chief Del Riley for an important discussion on Mi’kmaq Treaty Rights, Indigenous sovereignty, and the constitutional protection of Aboriginal and Treaty Rights in Canada.
Chief Del Riley is a Hereditary Crane Clan Chief of the Chippewa Nation, former President of the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations), former President of the Union of Ontario Indians, and former Chairman of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. He played a significant role in negotiating and securing Sections 25 and 35 of the Canadian Constitution, provisions that recognize and affirm Aboriginal and Treaty Rights across Canada.
This gathering will provide an opportunity to hear firsthand from one of the key Indigenous leaders involved in constitutional negotiations and to learn more about the ongoing importance of Treaty Rights for Mi’kmaq communities today.
Chief Riley has spent decades advocating for Indigenous peoples and continues to support Indigenous communities in advancing and defending their constitutional and Treaty Rights.
All community members, leadership, youth, Elders, allies, and those interested in learning more about Treaty Rights are welcome to attend.
🪶 “Understanding our treaties is understanding our relationship, responsibilities, and rights as Indigenous Peoples.”
