Pay attention to how someone reacts when you tell them no.

You don't need to explain away their anger, defensiveness, or sudden change in behavior. Observe it.

A healthy person can be disappointed without punishing you for having a boundary.

Their reaction to your “no” can tell you a lot about how they handle boundaries, rejection, and not getting their way.

I dive deeper into this in my conversation with retired Secret Service agent and author Brad Beeler, where we discuss why pattern recognition can be so important when identifying manipulation, deception, and emotional abuse.

Abusers can be kind sometimes. Yes.

But the loving moments don't erase the harmful ones. In fact, those moments of affection, kindness, and tenderness can make you question your own reality and hold onto hope that things will change.

You can acknowledge that someone was kind to you and recognize that they were abusive. Both can be true.

“I’m sorry” isn’t the same thing as repair.

Repair means naming what happened, understanding the impact of your actions, taking accountability, changing the behavior, and rebuilding trust over time.

You don't get to create a wound and then demand that someone stop feeling it because you apologized.

If the harmful behavior continues, there is no meaningful repair happening. An apology without changed behavior can become another part of the cycle. Words matter. But changed behavior is what makes an apology meaningful.

Were you ever called a "good girl" or praised for behaving in ways that made him happy?

That dynamic can create a powerful cycle of seeking approval and changing your behavior to keep the peace.

Abusers may miss your attention, emotional support, availability, validation, or the way you made their life easier, but that doesn't mean they miss you.

Don't confuse someone's desire to have access to you with genuine accountability, growth, or love.

Pay attention to what they miss - and what they're actually willing to change.

Stop looking at the potential. Start looking at the pattern.

When someone's words say one thing but their behavior consistently tells you something else, believe the behavior.

In this episode, I sit down with retired Secret Service agent and deception expert Brad Beeler to unpack how manipulators build trust, exploit cognitive biases, use push-pull dynamics, and create confusion long before obvious abuse appears.

Has anyone ever told you to stay quiet about the abuse?

Abuse thrives in silence. You don't owe anyone your silence to protect the person who hurt you. Speaking your truth can be part of reclaiming your voice, your reality, and your power.

A trauma bond isn't just having a hard time letting someone go. It isn't "loving them too much." It isn't two people bonding over shared trauma.

A trauma bond requires a power imbalance.

One person controls the affection, approval, punishment, or sense of safety in the relationship. They give just enough love, attention, or tenderness to keep hope alive... then take it away. Those intermittent "crumbs" become the hook that keeps you coming back.

Understanding the difference between attachment pain and a trauma bond can change how you see your relationship - and yourself.

Abuse thrives in silence. I nearly lost my life there.

Now, I choose to be loud. For myself, for the woman who's still questioning her reality, and for the one who needs someone to say, "It's not your fault, and you're not alone."

Silence protects abuse. Speaking up protects people.
