Today is PTSD Awareness Day.
As a social worker, I’ve had the privilege of supporting those impacted by trauma. I’ve seen how PTSD can affect a person as a whole - their sense of safety and control, relationships, work, sleep and self-esteem, and confidence.
I’ve learned that trauma doesn’t always look like what you see in movies. Many of those struggling may appear strong, resilient, and “fine” on the outside. However, they find themselves fighting invisible internal battles.
PTSD is not a weakness, a character flaw, or a life sentence. It is a human response to experiences that go beyond a person’s capacity to cope and bounce back. The symptoms were actually developed to help the person survive and adapt before, during, and after the trauma.
Today, I’m thinking of everyone who has carried or is carrying the effects of trauma. Healing is possible. The journey may not be linear, but healing and living a fulfilling and meaningful life is possible. You deserve compassion, support, and hope.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to our Veterans, First Responders, and all those who find themselves exposed to trauma in service of others. Thank you for your dedication, sacrifice, and service.
Thank you to those who have trusted me with their stories. Your resilience continues to inspire me every day.
