Canadian Equine Hoof Care Association

Canadian Equine Hoof Care Association The CEHCA’s goal is to support professional hoof care providers, as well as aspiring trimmers.

Our desire is to bring transparency into the field for horse owners to better understand the profession, our needs and what we can provide for their horses. Barefoot Trimmer Definitions:

A Barefoot Trimmer is a hoof care professional registered as a Canadian Equine Hoof Care Association member. A Barefoot Trimmer is trained in functional hoof care trimming methods. Practitioners strive to encoura

ge maximum soft tissue development by demonstrating functional trimming methodologies to achieve optimal health and barefoot soundness in the hoof. Various hoof protection tools and methods, as well as metal free alternatives, are implemented to achieve optimal hoof function and soundness for the wellbeing of the equine. The barefoot trimming system is based on an effective model which takes a complex structure (the equine foot) and engages all of the external structures (Hoof Wall, Frog, Bars & Sole), maximizing hoof function and hoof mechanism to achieve optimal soundness at rest and in movement.

Going to be a great webinar

🚨 **Just 2 Days to Go.**

Every hoof grows.

But how it grows, and what happens when that process goes wrong, is fundamental to understanding laminitis.

Too often we focus on the end result: stretched white lines, rotation, sinking and distorted hoof capsules.

The real answers begin much earlier.

Join Professor Chris Pollitt as he explains the biology of hoof growth, the structures responsible for producing healthy horn, and why understanding normal growth is essential before you can truly understand disease.

Whether you're a farrier, veterinary professional or a horse owner wanting evidence-based knowledge, this webinar will give you a clearer understanding of one of the most misunderstood areas of the equine foot.

Because if you don't understand how the hoof is built...
..it's impossible to fully understand how laminitis changes it.

Fantastic and very informative conversation with The Humble Hoof

What happens when barefoot doesn't work?

We likely have come across horses that just can't seem to get comfortable without hoof protection. The ones that frustrate us and seem to be dead set on having lameness issues. What might be going on under the surface?

Matthew Jackson from Scotland chatted with me to tackle this topic that doesn't get discussed enough in the hoofcare world. Matthew was on the podcast previously to share his journey from being a fully qualified farrier to embracing a more barefoot-focused, "no steel" approach to hoof care. This time, we decide to talk about what that means for horses that may have difficulty without hoof protection.

We discuss what it really means to improve hoof health from the inside out, how the internal structures of the hoof influence long-term soundness, and the many factors that can affect hoof quality and function. We also talk about the importance of keeping an open mind, avoiding dogma, and approaching our hoof care education as a lifelong learning journey.

Great conversation with The Humble Hoof .

There sure is a lot of talk lately about laminitis and founder, including opinions on the causes of these changes in the hoof and how to address them. People are getting passionate about the trim, the management, and the various reasons a horse can become laminitic. These conversations are important, and I wanted to jump in and re-publish a podcast episode we originally shared in 2020.

Dr. Debra Taylor of Twin Creeks Veterinary Services in Alabama is an absolute wealth of knowledge on laminitis; she focuses her practice on podiatry, and has done extensive work on laminitic cases. Back in 2020, she chatted with me about these three main causes of laminitis, and how to approach them. This conversation is still one of my absolute favorite interviews I've done on the podcast, and with all the talks lately (and even some drama) around founder issues, I thought a re-publish "throwback" to this episode was timely!

Are you afraid from grass??

Wilson from Hay OptiMizer with collaboration of Balanced Bay: Equine Nutrition Consulting has started a great research and the results are surprising.

Are you afraid of long, lush grass for your horse?
