Our Beauty of starting over.

Our Beauty of seeing our own worth.

Our Beauty of self forgiveness.

Our Beauty of self-awareness.

Our Beauty of awareness.

Our Beauty of advocacy.

Our Beauty of truth.

Our Beauty of accountability.

Life can give us challenging situations, but it also offers the chance to sit still and become uncomfortable. This discomfort can bring clarity amidst chaos. If we can see this in every moment, we’ll find spaces that teach us to become the version of yourself we’ve always needed.

Our Beauty.

Peace is complex and challenging to achieve, often requiring significant emotional, psychological, social, or financial costs. However, it brings clarity, allows for boundaries, preserves energy, and fosters boldness. Peace reaffirms that “no” is a complete sentence. Standing firm in our beliefs, even when doubted, reflects true peace. Achieving peace involves fighting hard and relearning lessons until understood. It is non-linear, imperfect, and beautiful in its imperfections. Peace is worth every effort, lesson, and journey.

As it’s the 8th annual in Canada and the 46th anniversary of PTSD as a DSM disorder, I reflect on my lived experiences.

Living with loved ones facing PTS, PTSD(I), and CPTSD(I) presents unique challenges. I once walked on eggshells, exhausted and questioning my own identity. Constant worries plagued me before my first coffee: How would they react? Would they understand their anger? Would I be safe? How would I manage the kids?

I’ve learned to advocate for myself, understanding the PTSI movement. Our loved ones carry their injury long after diagnosis.

Navigating emotions and understanding theirs is difficult, but harmonious coexistence is possible. Each PTSI journey is unique.

When things get tough, travel with care, recognize boundaries, and be mindful of compassionate fatigue. Cherish moments of clarity.

This is how I approach my days.

To my friends on a similar path, I’m here for you. This journey is ongoing, beyond awareness days or months.

To my 911 familia, this journey is tough, but my porch light remains on, affirming your need and worth.

This week was physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding for our first responder community. Corruption within services can leave members feeling betrayed and responsible to answer to the public, taking a toll on their well-being. Corruption, driven by power and control, devastates our mental and physical health and can turn into burnout . Rest and recovery should be daily, not just on days off. Regularly recharge, reflect, and reset. Small realignments, like the “spoon theory,” rejuvenate energy and emotional resilience. It’s okay to feel a range of emotions in safer spaces. We are human first, even when we are a police officer, a paramedic, a firefighter, a correctional officer, a dispatcher, or a therapist.

The impact of shifts, whether short or prolonged, is significant for both uniformed individuals and their families. While physical safety is crucial, mental safety can have lasting effects on first responders and their loved ones especially as a surviving member after a line of duty death. These challenges affect first responders, families, and the entire unit. Eventually, one might wonder how things got so bad, as the job may become overwhelming, stigma may set in, grief becomes heavy ; brain fog sets in and misunderstandings may occur.

No one stands alone. There is a space for you here. 10-20

As the world lives in urgency and chaos , we realize rest is an option. We push and push until exhaustion overtakes us, overwhelming our bodies, minds, thoughts, feelings, and emotions. This carry-on held space of resentment, sadness, grief, and numbness. It taught us one crucial lesson: we never had to carry it all. We’re not meant to take it all on. We were meant to hold space for ourselves too.

Regardless of your uniform, profession, status, or position, what matters the most is when you finally give yourself permission to lessen the weight you carry, one bit at a time.

In every tragic space around the loss of a first responder in the line of duty, we carry the heavy weight of emotions.
Some may not make sense and can be very overwhelming.
It is very human to seek answers.
As answers sometimes feel better than no answers at all.
Yet, what we need to do for ourselves is give ourselves permission to sit with the grief, the anger, process it and allow it to settle where it may.
There are stages of grief, but by no means does it require us to be in stages.
Feel the feeling in safe spaces. And when safe spaces become a place of conflict, you are permitted to find your safety again.
There is no right way to handle any tragedy that brings on sorrow, loss and grief.
Lean in here. Lean in spaces that create no other dialogues than sitting in the grief. Silence may feel uncomfortable, but sometimes it simply provides a sense of safety to someone who just needs another human to sit beside them and know a look can share a thousand thoughts.
No questions asked.
Let the grief, land.

In the injury space, First responders are often unlearning a survival response of being constantly alert. When our worth was tied to our contributions to others and our community , slowing down was perceived as failure.
When our rest was met with guilt, being productive became a means of feeling secure. Yet, what appears to be a simple inability to relax, is in fact a deeply ingrained belief that being still signifies being unworthy. Our OCD becomes an identity and enmeshed with mental/moral injuries.

Regrets are a common human experience, often manifesting as a series of “what if, coulda, woulda and shoulda” thoughts. However, these regrets can be detrimental, leading to self-doubt and imposter syndrome.

Despite these challenges, it is important to recognize that we still have the power to transform our regrets. This transformation is not about diminishing our worth but rather about adopting a shift in mindset and developing a system that leverages our lived experiences.

This system is built on the principle of not compromising our authenticity or vulnerability, even in the face of regrets. Instead, it highlights the version of ourselves that was self-doubted by these regrets.

Authenticity and vulnerability are our unique gifts, and it is through our self-perception that we can change the system. Ultimately, our regrets can become a source of reclaimed power.
