For Christians living with OCD, it can be difficult to distinguish between the voice of OCD and the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

According to the Bible, the Holy Spirit may convict us of sin, but He does not torment, accuse, manipulate, or demand impossible certainty.

If the voice you’re hearing is producing fear, bo***ge, and endless compulsions, it may not be God’s voice at all.

Disclaimer: This post is educational and cannot replace guidance from a trusted pastor or mental health professional. Many Christians with OCD benefit from evidence-based treatment such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

In some Christian circles, happiness is confused with the deep joy that is found in Christ. The joy we find in Christ is because of the hope we have in Him, not because our circumstances are good.

It is possible to feel this joy without being happy about your pain.

Our all-knowing God understands the anguish you feel when an intrusive thought knocks you off your feet. He knows the distress you feel when you resist compulsions.

Scripture says that He is near to the brokenhearted. He also lays out various examples of lament in His Word - a blueprint for what it means to cry out to Him.

God does not ask us to pretend that things are okay when they’re not. He asks us to lean on Him with honesty and open hands.

Little ways I’ve been taking care of my mental health as a therapist with OCD 🤍

The best, most honest self-care takes place in the rhythms of our days.

What we can learn from Psalm 46 about faith & OCD 🕊️

Psalm 46 reminds us that God is not demanding frantic striving from us. He is a refuge for the overwhelmed.

Psalm 42 reminds us that faith and suffering can coexist.

“Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.” - Psalm 42:11

Hi! I’m Laura Osorio 👋

I’m a psychotherapist in Ontario, Canada. I’m also a writer, wife to my best friend, mama of two little ones, and someone deeply passionate about the intersection of Christian faith and mental health. I believe that good brain science and faith are absolutely compatible, and that the Church should be a place of refuge for the suffering.

I specialize in OCD and trauma as a clinician. A lot of the content I share here explores what happens when neuroscience, theology, and real human suffering meet.

I’m currently writing a book with The Daily Grace Co. () about discerning between God’s voice and OCD’s voice — a topic incredibly close to my heart both personally and professionally.

I also speak and write on a freelance basis. If you’re looking for a contributing author or speaker, you can connect with me at lauraosorio.ca!

Outside of all these things, you can usually find me spending time with my family, playing scrabble, studying the Bible, or sipping coffee that’s been warmed up 3-4 times. I also love to sing and try new hobbies. Above all, my heart is for Christ and all people.

I pray this content blesses you and I’m so glad you’re here! 🤍

The paradox of healing and renewal is exactly this: freedom is often found on the other side of extreme discomfort. As a therapist, this is a road I often walk with clients. It’s also one I’ve walked in my own experience with OCD over and over again.

An important part of the Christian faith is an understanding that full healing does not occur in this age, but the one to come. The beauty of neuroplasticity is that even in this lifetime, the brain is never permanently fixed. What a merciful design God came up with to allow the human mind to change — allowing us to operate with a constant hope on this side of eternity.

How our brains were designed to learn safety just like they learn fear.
