The first day of fall is here, and Ottawa is about to get a lot more colourful.

It is the perfect time to go for a walk, enjoy the cooler air, and spend a little extra time outside with someone you love.

For older adults, staying active and connected to the community can be incredibly important.

At the same time, fall can bring a few extra safety concerns.

Wet leaves can be slippery.
It gets dark earlier.
Walkways may become harder to see.
And changing weather can make even familiar routes a little more challenging.

A few simple things can help reduce the risk of falls:
Wear shoes with good grip
Choose well-lit, even walking paths
Clear leaves from steps and walkways
Take your time and avoid rushing
Bring along a mobility aid or support person if needed

We never want fall prevention to mean giving up the things someone enjoys.
The goal is to help people stay active, independent, and confident while doing them safely.
