This is how community risk reduction works in a small town. 🔥🏘️
With a wildfire active near our home in the Pemberton area, the FireSmart team has been out in the community reminding folks to keep their properties cleared — and this week Fire-ED got to join them at a public event at N’Quatqua First Nation.
No time for a full program that day — just enough for kids to sit down, “dress” a storyboard, and hear about hazards room by room: front yard, living room, kitchen, hallway, bathroom/hallway, bedroom… and the fire station, set a little further away to show it’s across town. Every hazard they spotted got a checkmark. We even ran through how a fire can start from something as small as a candle left burning.
Tribal police, chief and council, educators, and the preschool all stopped by. Some of our adult neighbours got right down on the floor to dress the storyboards themselves. Word spread table to table — the preschool director came by, took a card, and wants to bring us in for a full demonstration at the school. The FireSmart coordinator gathered details on our Wildfire Edition kit (two extra storyboards on outdoor hazards) to bring back to leadership, and another agency has already asked about having us out to demonstrate too.
No hesitation, just an open door and a community ready to learn together.

When the escape route is blocked and the window is all that’s left — who taught the community what to do?

We tell children — know your escape route. Get out. Meet at the designated spot. Family safe and accounted for. But nobody was teaching the harder lesson. The one that starts with: what happens when the escape route is gone?

The hall is filled with smoke. The door is hot. Every exit you planned for is blocked. And the window is all you have.

Part 3 of Field Notes From the Front Lines goes to the hard places. The children who banged on the window until they could no longer breathe. The neighbour who had a ladder and was told to stay back. That neighbour is still living with what they cannot unsee. That is a lifetime sentence for someone who was just following instructions.

This is also the post where we talk about the Barho family — seven children lost in Halifax in 2019, thirty seconds from first flame to fully engulfed. A newcomer family from Syria welcomed to Canada with cheering crowds, and never taught what to do when the smoke fills the hall at 2 in the morning.

This is the gap Fire-ED was built to fill.

We can’t keep expecting “free deliverables” and mascot visits to count as valid public education programs.

The costumes. The colouring pages. The stickers and tattoos. All of it well-intentioned. None of it measured. And the death toll keeps climbing.
