🌄 Trails, teamwork, and true Ottawa Valley spirit 🌄

Week 2 of Community Week took our Queen’s University medical students on an ATV adventure from Laurentian Valley through Pembroke to Petawawa and back; a perfect way to experience the beauty of the Ottawa Valley.

This experience wouldn’t be possible without the incredible collaboration of our municipal partners who work together to highlight the best our communities have to offer 👏

A heartfelt thank you as well to the dedicated volunteers, including the Renfrew County ATV Club and the Laurentian Valley 50+ Fit and Feisty group 💪 Your enthusiasm, knowledge, and warm welcome brought the evening to life and made it truly memorable for our learners.

There’s something special about seeing the Ottawa Valley through fresh eyes, where natural beauty, strong community connections, and a spirit of adventure come together 💙

This is what Community Week is all about: showing our future physicians not just where they can work, but where they can belong.

Week 2 is here and we’re so excited to welcome our Queen’s University Community Week students to PRH! 🎉

We’re looking forward to another week packed with hands-on clinical experiences, meaningful connections with our incredible physicians, and of course… plenty of fun along the way! 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

From exploring different specialties to diving into life in our community, we hope this week brings lots of learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

✨ Inspiring the Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals ✨

This past Saturday, we were thrilled to host our Morning in Medicine session with local high school students from grades 10–12—an incredible opportunity to spark curiosity and explore future careers in healthcare!

Led by the amazing Family Medicine Residents from the Pembroke Family Medicine Teaching Unit, students rotated through five interactive, hands-on skills stations, including:
🫀 CPR
💉 Injections
🪡 Suturing
📟 Ultrasound imaging
🚑 Naloxone & EpiPen administration

From learning lifesaving techniques to trying out clinical skills firsthand, students were fully immersed in what a future in medicine can look like. Equally impactful were the conversations they had with our residents, who shared their personal journeys into medicine and offered valuable insight into the path ahead.

A big thank you to our dedicated residents for their enthusiasm and mentorship, and to the students for their engagement and eagerness to learn. Opportunities like this are an important step in inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals right here in our community. 💙

🌟 That’s a wrap on uOttawa Community Week at PRH! 🌟

Over the past week, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming a fantastic group of uOttawa medical students to Pembroke Regional Hospital and the Ottawa Valley. From hands-on clinical exposure to meaningful conversations with our care teams, the students embraced every opportunity to learn, connect, and experience rural medicine firsthand.

A sincere thank you to our physicians and staff who generously shared their time, expertise, and passion—your involvement is what makes these experiences so impactful and memorable for our learners.

We’re also incredibly grateful to the broader community for coming together to make the week so special. From local partners to volunteers and activity hosts, your enthusiasm and hospitality truly showcased the strength and warmth of our region.

We’re closing out the week with some great moments from the students’ casting session in our fracture clinic—just one example of the valuable, hands-on learning that took place throughout their time here.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this week a success. We hope to see these future physicians back in the Ottawa Valley again soon! 💙

🌊Exploring the Ottawa Valley—One Rapid at a Time!

As part of their Community Week experience, our uOttawa medical students wrapped up their final community activity with an unforgettable day rafting the Ottawa River with Wilderness Tours!

From thrilling rapids to plenty of laughter along the way, it was an exhilarating, adrenaline-filled experience—and the perfect way to showcase the natural beauty and adventure our region has to offer.

A huge thank you to the incredible guides at Wilderness Tours—your enthusiasm, expertise, and dedication to safety ensured everyone had a fun, safe, and unforgettable day on the water.

Experiences like this are all part of what makes training in our community so special—the perfect balance of medicine, connection, and adventure.

We wrapped up at one of our favourite stops in the City of Pembroke with a stunning sunset over the water at the Pembroke Marina.

While taking in the beautiful views, the group enjoyed a pizza dinner and cooled off with delicious ice cream treats from River Run Treats—a perfect way to enjoy a warm evening by the waterfront.

Moments like this showcase not only the beauty of our community, but the simple experiences that make it feel like home. 💙

Our next stop brought us to the beautiful Town of Petawawa, where we took in breathtaking views at the bridge overlooking the rapids.

With the sound of rushing water in the background, the group enjoyed refreshing craft root beer and cream soda from the local favourite, Dog House Brewing Company—such a fun and unique treat!

This scenic pause was the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, showcasing the natural beauty and local flavour that make this region so special.

🫐✨ A Sweet Start (and Finish!) at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch ✨🫐

Our ATV adventure kicked off—and wrapped up—in the beautiful Laurentian Valley at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch, and it could not have been a more perfect stop!

From the moment we arrived, the group was welcomed with warm hospitality and an incredible spread of local treats—fresh donuts, homemade fudge, coffee, juice, and more. After a day of exploring, we returned to enjoy time with the animals and gather around a cozy bonfire, complete with local beverages.

The scenic views, delicious treats, and welcoming atmosphere made Hugli’s a true highlight of the evening. A big thank you to the team for such a memorable experience! 💙
