We don’t need to exclusively rely on psychedelics to reach a state of expanded, connected and mind altering consciousness.

We can get there through a deeply attuned, sustained creative practice.

Here, we can reach deep flow, our inner reaches and connection with the Holy.

Playing the bones.

This weekend, I saw a percussionist of a Mexican band bring out a giant jawbone in the thick of a concert and started PLAYING it.

I nearly lost it.

The sound of the rattling molars and wooden stick scraped across jagged teeth was…. Thrilling. Ancient. Familiar.

Found him afterwards, and asked if it was a horse jaw. It was! And he showed me the basic technique. He also asked if I’d ever seen rib bones played in the hand, a loose clacking together, like spoons. Apparently they did this in Ireland, so now, I’m on the lookout.

The large proportions of the horse jaw brings out the rattling sounds much more pronounced than my beautiful bear, but worth a delightful try.

The start of another intention filled spirit filled prayer filled drum, softening in my favourite waters, the ones I’ve known the longest.

Harkening back to this winter, when I made the Purse of the Deer for a dear friend who is stepping powerfully into her calling as one of their stewards.

Every bit of it, from hide to bone to sinew, made from deer. The bulk of which, I’d brain tanned, the soft buckskin strap I’d purchased years ago. Sewn with sinew I harvested, dried, pounded and made cordage from.

Vertebra and rib bone picked out of the mush of bone broth from a locally harvested deer.

To deeply come to know an animal, is to create with your hands with them.

They form your muscle memory and fill your lungs with their scent and walk through your dreams.

We are all made up of the same stuff, our deer kin and us.

Distilled essence of the thing…. One of the key, potent tools worked with in art therapy.

You’re working through something. It’s big, it’s a lot. It feels like a lot. Your creative process is a LOT. You let it all out, all flow.

Step back. Breathe. Have a look. What do you see?

In all of it…. Is there a central theme idea tone word colour felt sense in the body movement pattern combination?

Can you tease it out cut it out condense it draw it… this essence?

Because if you can do this…

THIS is what you’ll remember.

THIS is what you can take with you. In a wallet bag carry on pocket.

And THIS is your infused object that carries the energy lesson meaning hidden now revealed gem of what your creative process showed you.
