From our founder;
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POSTS YOU WILL READ ABOUT NUTRITION...
I woke up at 3am the night before last with something on my mind that I wanted to write to help people understand how they can revolutionise their health. A long read, but possibly one of the most important examples on how nutrition works that could change your life. Please share it with any doctor or scientist that you know, not because they are trained in nutrition because they are usually are not, but because they often give advice in this area and/or need to understand this area to have a more complete picture of nutrition and health:
Over the last few emails and posts I have introduced you to some of the miraculous minerals found within the broad mineral spectrum of Superfoods Plus (75+ minerals). I have been laying the foundations for what I want to share today, because this explains the power of comprehensive nutrition compared to isolated nutrients.
I believe a great deal of nutritional science is flawed, limited by asking questions that are too small and measuring the easiest things to measure. Science may investigate whether a nutrient, sometimes in an isolated or synthetic form, produces a particular measurable outcome, without first understanding the enormous biological network required for the body to absorb, transport, retain, distribute and finally use that nutrient.
Please read this email carefully, perhaps even twice, because once you understand this principle, you may never look at nutrition in quite the same way again.
Many years ago, I started questioning the conventional approach to supplementation. Foods in nature do not present us with purified, isolated doses of one nutrient surrounded by nothing else. They arrive within extraordinarily complex biological matrices containing proteins, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, plant compounds and countless other components. That led me to two questions:
👉 What if the biological environment surrounding a nutrient helps determine whether the body can ultimately use it where it is needed?
👉 Secondly, while isolated nutrients can unquestionably produce measurable effects, what else happens elsewhere in the biological system when we substantially alter one component without the wider nutritional environment within which nature normally supplies nutrition?
✨ Those questions fundamentally changed the way I thought about formulation. Let me use zinc and reproduction as an example.
Zinc plays an extraordinary role in both male and female reproductive biology. Normal prostate tissue accumulates exceptionally high concentrations of zinc. That zinc changes prostate-cell metabolism, allowing citrate to accumulate. The prostate then secretes zinc and citrate-rich fluid into semen, creating a specialised chemical environment surrounding s***m.
At the higher zinc concentrations found in seminal fluid, zinc helps keep s***m relatively restrained. As s***m move through the female reproductive tract and their zinc environment changes, inhibition of some of the mechanisms involved in activation is reduced. The s***m undergo a remarkable transformation called ‘capacitation’, including the development of the powerful hyperactivated movement required as they approach an egg.
Then something equally extraordinary happens with Women, as their egg matures, it actively accumulates enormous amounts of zinc. That zinc helps maintain the mature egg in a paused state while it awaits activation.
When activation occurs, calcium signalling triggers the egg to eject a large quantity of its stored zinc in what scientists call the zinc spark. Using zinc-sensitive fluorescent imaging, researchers can actually see this release as a spectacular flash around the egg.
The fall in intracellular zinc helps the egg resume its cell cycle and begin the transition towards embryonic development. Zinc released around the egg also participates in changes associated with preventing additional s***m from fertilising it. That alone is remarkable, however, here is the part I believe is far more important:
The body does not see “10 mg of zinc” as a number on a supplement label that simply needs topping up. Someone could be consuming zinc and yet differences in digestion, absorption, retention, distribution and cellular utilisation can dramatically influence what ultimately happens to that zinc. Zinc bioavailability extends far beyond simply asking how much entered the bloodstream.
Before zinc can become part of an enzyme, enter a cell, accumulate in prostate tissue, participate in s***m biology or be deliberately concentrated inside a developing egg, it enters an extraordinary living network:
Its journey can involve the food matrix in which it arrived, digestion, proteins and amino acids, intestinal zinc transporters, carrier proteins such as albumin, metallothioneins that bind and regulate zinc, interactions with other minerals, cellular energy production, membrane transport, gene expression, hormonal signalling, tissue-specific transporters, antioxidant and redox systems, storage mechanisms, redistribution and excretion. Even dietary protein and phytate can materially alter zinc absorption before that journey has properly begun.
Now consider something even bigger, every single one of those processes also has its own complex biological dependencies:
The transporter is made from something. Its production is controlled by something. Its activity depends upon the cellular environment. That environment depends upon energy metabolism. Energy metabolism depends upon still more nutrients, enzymes and signalling systems. Those systems influence other systems, which feed backwards and forwards into still others.
It is less like a straight line and more like looking at the stars in the universe, except every star is connected to countless others in a vast matrix of relationships, with one system influencing another, which influences another, which may then feed back and influence the first.
In this modern-day world, vast numbers of nutrients can be reduced or depleted through intensive and chemical farming, long-term cold storage, food processing and ultra-processing, pharmaceutical nutrient depletion and other modern influences. Once you understand how dependent the body is on vast, interconnected nutritional networks, it does not take long to appreciate the potential consequences of removing pieces from that biological matrix.
So when a study gives somebody an isolated nutrient and demonstrates that their blood level increased, that finding can be perfectly correct while still measuring only one tiny part of the biological story. The more important question is: what was the body actually able to do with it?
This is why comprehensive nutrition has always made so much more biological sense than treating the human body as a collection of isolated nutrient requirements. My philosophy is very simple:
"Give the body the tools it needs, and the body is capable of doing extraordinary things"
Many of you will have heard me share this philosophy many times over the years. We do not have to understand every one of these networks before respecting their existence. Science may take generations to unravel even a fraction of them, so I believe it is very naive to dismiss something simply because science has not yet proved or fully explained it.
Superfoods Plus was created from this philosophy. It was designed to provide an extraordinarily broad nutritional foundation from nature, including wholefoods, antioxidants, phytonutrients, proteins and amino acids from its food ingredients, friendly bacteria, prebiotics, fibre, digestive enzymes and our 75+ ancient plant-derived trace mineral complex.
The importance is not about what every individual ingredient may do, it is also what becomes biologically possible when the body has more of the nutritional tools that it needs to carry out the incredible processes every second of every day.
That is why Superfoods Plus is something my family and I will not willingly miss for a single day. We even keep additional supplies ourselves because we never want to be without it. There is far more to Superfoods Plus than I have ever been able to explain on a label.
Over the coming posts/emails, I will share some big reveals about the power of nutrition and why understanding the biology behind it changes the way we should think about nutrition itself.
